Key West, Florida: Dazzling Sunsets, Six-Toed Cats, and Cuban Culture

Located just off Florida's southernmost tip and north of Cuba, the island of Key West is undoubtedly the most famous of the Florida Keys. Frommer's calls it "the land of the eternal vacation." Most tourists come to Key West's gulf-side beaches to snorkel, surf, or fish, but no trip to Key West is complete without a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where the author lived, worked, and kept his six-toed cats. More than 50 descendants of those famous felines still prowl the grounds of the museum to this day.

At nighttime, locals and visitors alike converge on the Mallory Square Dock to watch the sun dip below the Gulf of Mexico, casting swaths of deep orange and pink against the horizon. The spectacle is so breathtaking that it inspires a sunset celebration each night. The dock comes to life with travelling psychics, one-man bands, and food vendors serving fresh-squeezed lemonade and plantain chips.

Call Ghostbusters ... I am puzzled. The hotel is about 2 miles to the 'Key West Airport' (Actually 1.6 miles per Trip Advisor - TA). It was at the TA site that I located a Marriott Fairfield Inn. Since we were arriving at EYW (the airport code for Key West International airport) on September 8th, at 2:54pm I did a search on TA that included Airport Transportation and the Fairfield popped right up. Since I am a fan of both TA and Marriott, I jumped on this and reserved three rooms. After booking through Marriott Reservation center, I realized I needed to make a change to one of the rooms; here I found out from the Reservation telephone link that there is no shuttle to or from an airport that is 1.6 miles away. Say What?? This is a Marriott that is within 1.6 miles and does not provide an airport shuttle?? Is this a mistake by TA? Not likely; the hotels provide info to TA. Who do I call? Ghostbusters? No, every Marriott member would simply call the Front Desk at the facility and there, someone would have an answer for the six flying passengers. But wait ! The front desk said ... "Drum Roll please dat, dat, dot, ... "Call a taxi when you arrive". Hmmm, not what I expected. We plan to arrive in the lowest of all low season's and smack dab in the middle of Hurricane Season and the Marriott says ... Call a Cab. For me ... this is not an acceptable resolution. The reply could have been ... "Although we don't have a shuttle, we could arrange a few cabs to be there on your arrival; since THIS hotel doesn't provide airport service, you will be required to pay the transport but just know the current rate is $XX. Please confirm the time you arrive and we will try to make this work". WOW - how is it that THIS DID NOT HAPPEN. Instead, Marriott training advised: Call a cab. In the past, I would go with TA because they are always correct. On TA, my search results indicated that Fairfield Inn, Hampton Inn and several others provided airport transport: drilling down, the TA response excluded Free Transportation. WOW ! I never thought to ask a search engine for those hotels that require taxi services to their facilities; It just doesn't seem right.

Disappointing experience at Marriott We had a deeply disappointing experience at this Marriott property. Due to severe rain and dangerous driving conditions, we were unable to reach the hotel safely. When we called to request a cancellation or reschedule, the front desk staff was not only unhelpful but shockingly rude and dismissive. At a time of stress, we expected empathy—not condescension and unprofessional behavior. Marriott needs to seriously address this level of customer service. Weather emergencies are beyond anyone’s control, and instead of support, we were met with disrespect. Marriott is known for high service standards, but this experience fell far below that. I hope the management addresses this behavior appropriately and trains staff to handle genuine customer concerns with more respect.

10/10 Stay This hotel is perfect. It has a beautiful pool, spacious clean rooms and a complimentary shuttle that drops you off in the heart of old town. Johany at the front desk is the friendliest host I’ve ever encountered at any Marriott I’ve ever stayed at. He provided great recommendations for things to do and places to eat that were family friendly during our stay. Bonita at the front desk was also extremely helpful booking the shuttle for us. I highly recommended this hotel to anyone looking for a beautiful and comfortable stay!

Good hotel. Clean, large room. Helpful staff. I went to key west for a work trip. This hotel is located on the east side of the island. It's a simple drive to the Old Town neighborhood. The hotel room was large and clean. The air conditioner worked very well. The staff was helpful and accommodating. Binita at the front desk was helpful and friendly.
