Pittsburgh’s Neville Island: Industry and Ice Hockey in the Ohio River

Situated in the middle of the Ohio River, Neville Island is a quiet retreat from the busy streets of Pittsburgh. Home to the city’s industrial spirit for generations, the island also serves as the headquarters for much of Robert Morris University’s athletic department; catch Division I hockey during the winter and spring at the RMU Island Sports Center.

Neville Island sits a short drive from downtown Pittsburgh, which occupies the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers. Known as the Golden Triangle, this wedge of waterfront real estate is where the city’s cultural, financial, and historic districts converge. Take a stroll through the area or navigate the more than 20 miles of bike trails to discover art galleries, historic buildings, and shiny skyscrapers home to corporate powerhouses such as United States Steel and PNC bank.

It’s Just Okay The room was clean, and the mattress was comfortable. It was nice to have a small refrigerator. I was also given a little welcome package of cookies and two small bottles of water. I am giving it a three because I could hear the traffic going by so loudly that I went to the window to see if it was open. The covers on the bed were thin and tucked in so far down at the foot of the bed that I couldn’t pull them up to your shoulders. I had to crank the heat to 76 degrees to sleep comfortably. The breakfast was just so-so. Powdered eggs, sausage that looked undone, thin juice, and lots of carbs. It’s an ok place to stay for a night or two.

Sub-Par Property Let me start by saying that this hotel has potential, but it is being neglected by the staff as best I can tell and is not highly occupied. Neville Island is about 20-25 minutes from Downtown Pittsburgh and situated off I-79. Although it is very unlikely that you’d stay here while traveling due to its proximity to very few convenient restaurants or shops, it is, nonetheless, located off the interstate. Check in was easy and our room was stuffy and the bathroom needed better cleaning. We found the room to be impossible to regulate from a heat/cool perspective and my son and I both had terribly runny noses and congestion that cleared after we departed the property. My best guess is that the VERY noisy Heat/Cooling unit needed a deep clean. Also, it is exceptionally loud. I grew up by a train track and am not a delicate sleeper, but if you are, this unit will surely keep you up all night. The toilet seat also showed clear signs of staining and either needed some CLR spray or to be replaced completely. I will add a photo. The breakfast area in the morning was well stocked, but also poorly cleaned. Food particles were left on the counter, the same waffle batter cup was being used by multiple guests, and there was no fork to remove waffles from the one waffle maker they had. I gave the hotel 2 stars because the price was very good. We paid $95/night, which is almost unheard of post-COVID, but it became abundantly obvious to us that it was because (based on a lack of cars in the parking lot), that occupancy here was probably low and merited such a rate. We will not stay here again and do not recommend it.

Nicely updated Fairfield Fairfield has been my brand of choice a lot lately, and this property was very nicely updated. The skin of the hotel is definitely older, but just about every aspect has been updated. The lobby, hallways, and rooms have all been brought in line with most newer build Fairfield hotels. The only drawbacks physically to me were beds are a little firm for my taste, and the refrigerator was a short cube rather than being taller. The breakfast selection was sufficient, but was not as broad as many Fairfields I have been to. There is an indoor pool and 24 hour fitness center on site.
