Detroit: World-Class Museums and Revitalization Projects in the Motor City

The Motor City has certainly seen better days, but if you’re willing to look, you can still find a lot of worthwhile things to do and see. The downtown area has many top-flight cultural institutions and museums, and an influx of young people and artists are working to revitalize the city.

The 658,000-square-foot Detroit Institute of Arts, located downtown, comprises 100 galleries, an auditorium, a lecture hall, and a reference library. Among its vast collection: a dragon-tile relief from the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and a self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh. One of the city’s most fascinating art displays can’t be found at a museum or gallery. Tyree Guyton’s The Heidelberg Project is two blocks of once-decrepit houses that have been transformed into an open-air art installation, with colorful sculptures made out of discarded items including stuffed animals, vinyl records, old shoes, and scrap metal.

Frequent Marriot brand customer; will not be back to this mess The management only cleans (refreshes) the rooms 'as required'. During our 6 night stay, we got ONE 'refresh'. We were forced to another room at one point to have a cleaner room, and had to pick up clean towels daily at the front desk. The breakfast was the same every day, with some items occasionally unavailable (yogurt, choc. milk, coffee cream). The coffee was decent, though.

Going downhill, avoid We have stayed here several times this year as it is convenient to family. However we will not be staying here any longer, the property has been getting worse with each stay. On our last stay, we had a number of issues that the staff made no efforts to resolve. To begin with, we had no hot water in our room. I complained about this to the front desk, who told me they had no other complaints about hot water issues. Not really sure what that means, nothing changed, we continued to not have any even remotely warm water in our shower or sink. The breakfast was terrible on this stay. There was clearly spoiled/rotten food, which I pointed out to the breakfast attendant, who did nothing about it. Most of the hot items were empty, and not replaced during the time we were having breakfast. The coffee was room temperature, we mentioned this as well but when we checked later, it was still room temperature so clearly it was not replaced. The rooms, despite being recently renovated, are still kind of rough and have a wet/musty smell to them. Honestly I am wondering about this renovation, when we stayed here several months ago, the renovations appeared to be in the same stage as this November. Some of the same piles of material are in the same place as the last time we were there. Some of it really looks like it should not be stored out in the elements. Something absolutely needs to be done about the parking lot/driveway as well. It is very rough and bumpy to enter the hotel. We did try out the pool, however it was very cloudy so we did not stay long. I doubt it is being cleaned often, someone had written "YUCK" on the wall of the pool, I assume someone would have seen that and cleaned it off if they were cleaning the pool often. The hot tub was closed for maintenance problems during our stay. This hotel is decently located but there are better alternatives in the area. I would recommend staying somewhere else.

Decent Value, Renovations Coming! I had a decent 8-day stay and I can’t complain for what I paid. Nice beds, nice lobby, usable fitness room for cardio and dumbbells. It is pet friendly but beware that they charge a massive $75/day. But if you’re staying long term like me, it’s capped off at $150 for the visit. They are in the midst of a major renovation and it is needed. A lot of little things were broken and the bathtub had a really bad leak that I needed to block up with the big towels (which still got soaked). The employees were all great and very helpful, that is hard to find these days. They did a great job with the breakfast.
