Saint Lucie County, Florida: Oceanfront Nature Preserves and World-Class Golf

Saint Lucie County, located about 135 miles north of Miami, is lined with quiet white-sand beaches. The area is also home to thousands of acres of parks and nature preserves, including Indian River Lagoon’s marshes and mangroves. About 20 minutes north in Fort Pierce, the Savannas Recreation Area evokes the Florida Everglades with five biological communities, from wet prairies to pine flat woods.

Aside from ecotourism, Saint Lucie County’s main draw is golfing at PGA Village. Hailed as 1 of the 75 Best Golf Resorts in North America by Golf Digest in 2009, the resort features courses mapped out by golfing legends Tom Fazio and Pete Dye. Its practice facility with bunkers simulates famous golf courses from around the world, including Pebble Beach and Doral’s Blue Monster.

Why is the A/C so warm at night? Decent hotel for the area, but note that there is a "65" degree limit for the air conditioner - you cannot make it cooler than that. And there is NO way that it was actually 65 degrees, since I was sweating all night. Also, the pillows smelled weird. They need washing. Didn't take advantage of the breakfast but it looked good. I grabbed an orange and a banana on my way to a work appointment.

Door keys not working Although the staff did their best. It was over an hour and five rooms before we got into a room. We were told the door locks were being up graded on Monday but that did not help us as we were staying Thursday night. I did feel we should have been offered water or coffee while we waited.

Halfway House I’m not sure what they are operating out of this hotel, but it seems to be some sort of halfway house. I’ve never felt so unsafe in my life. There were homeless, extremely dirty and (sadly) mentally challenged men wandering at every turn. Truly a scary and bizarre experience.
