Cancún: Cool White Sands and Mayan Relics

Located on a barrier island shaped like the number seven, Cancún's Hotel Zone juts into the Caribbean Sea at the northeast tip of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. With the sea on one side and freshwater lagoons on the other, it's a popular spot for sailing and snorkeling. Although the beaches and barrier reefs are a major draw, the geography is equally enticing further inland, where you can dive into an underground river or take a speedboat through a mangrove jungle.

The stone columns of El Rey Ruins, an ancient Mayan site dating back to the second and third centuries BCE, lie within the city’s Hotel Zone. Believed to be a royal burial ground, the archaeological site is also home to wild iguanas that lounge in the sun.

Nice boutique hotel but avoid the 90 min pressure sell for discount holidays! Nice boutique hotel with random Jamaican themed beach bar and restaurant by ‘RoMarley’ and an Italian restaurant! Rooms are very clean and serviced daily with a turn down service in the evening too. The staff are all very pleasant and attentive but on arrival they coerce you into booking a 90 minute appointment to sell you a discount holiday scheme. We did it as you get a free excursion and 150 USD (they said cash but was actually hotel voucher) for attending. It’s a very hard sell with 2 people at times trying to talk you into it and was up to the 2 hour point when we said ‘No’ firmly but politely and left. We felt the service declined a bit after this. The free excursion from enduring the sales pitch is to a local cenote, however this is via a jewellery store (45 mins) and a tequila tasting/selling (30 mins) both hard selling and very overpriced. By the time the transport collects you from the tequila shop it’s 2.5 hours out of your day before you get to the cenote. You have three hours at the cenote, which is more than enough. We were all inclusive at the hotel but the menus are quite limited across the three restaurant/bars and the same every day, the menu at the roof top bar is the best for breakfast and lunch. We went into the local town for dinner a few times for variety and to get decent Mexican food which is bizarrely lacking here. The hotel has two nice swimming pools and a beach front area; the rooftop pool is adults only which is a bonus. Tips are expected for everything and becomes quite tedious and awkward with staff sometimes lingering until they have been tipped. It soon mounts up with breakfast, lunch, dinner and getting drinks/snacks throughout the day especially if you are there for 10 days. The hotel organised excursions are expensive and we did ours through a tour operator in the town which were around 30-40% cheaper. Overall a very nice stay but the sales and tipping take the edge of the experience.

Nice Hotel The reason I rated the hotel of four was because I had to request paper towels for my kitchen three times. I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but I felt like I was getting hassled and blown off for a simple request and it made me feel like they did not care about us after check-in. Now let me move on to more important things. I felt like the hotel was very nice very clean. The staff was very pleasant. I felt like the food at the restaurant was great. I generally do not like all inclusives, but I did not see any buffets. To be fair, we sat down and ate at only two restaurants. The third restaurant we ordered pool side so I never went inside. However, the food there was great that we ordered. It was very fresh and I felt like they had some very nice options other than just, the typical burgers fries and hotdogs. I was very pleased. The food was plated very well and I felt like the drinks were premium alcohol. They tasted excellent.. our room was very spacious and clean and comfortable and the robes and slippers were a nice touch. We had an ocean view room and the view was not good on that side of the hotel but it was not awful. The beach was full of seaweed, but it was just that time of the year. Nothing the hotel could’ve done about that. They did try and clean it up as much as possible, but it was just very overwhelming. I like that they allow you just to relax by the pool if you want and there’s none of those screaming pool boys to try and engage you with games and etc. so for that reason alone I would definitely revisit.

Wonderful place with some issues. We stayed here on and off for about three weeks and had an overall good experience. The location is gorgeous and yes there is some seaweed but they’ve hired a crew who have to clean the sea weed off the beach the whole day. It made me very uncomfortable because they had to work in the steaming hot sun all day, which I didn’t like at all! People shouldn’t work like slaves. The hotel should definitely look into a better solution. Most of the staff is amazing, super sweet and work very hard to make your holiday truly unforgettable. I have to name them because they were superstars and I will never forget them. Roberto,Jorge and Raquel at breakfast were exceptional and should definitely be supervising all of the other waitstaff. They make the hotel special and treat everyone like kings and queens. They always had the best mood and attitude and I can assure you Americans are very demanding. I’ve travelled all over the world and they are the best waiters and restaurant manager I ever had the pleasure of experiencing and meeting! A big thank you, wonderful superstars!❤️ Mila and Mel❤️ A special shoutout to Erick, who was the hardest and nicest worker on the beach. I’ve never seen anyone run as hard as he does!_ Andrea, very good listener and problemsolver. Very nice, smart lady!_ Also, Angel in reception was very sweet with gorgeous movie villain looks. What more can a girl ask for.__ I still loved him even though he wanted to sell me a condo in the hotel every time I saw him. Please don’t fall for the condo sell pitch! The rooms are quite spacious and modern, bed reasonably comfy, Nice big tv and great airconditioning. But they definitely needs maintenance, paint peeling, mold etc..mainly the bathroom and the kitchenette. I heard a lot of guests complaining about room issues. Housekeeping is wonderful and kept the rooms spotless. We stayed in three different rooms in the hotel as we travelled some days and then came back to this hotel. Bathroom has a very weak ‘rain shower’ which maybe functioned properly when the hotel first opened.. but there's also a handshower with very strong water pressure, so you can still get clean. Also, maybe you should tell housekeeping not to scrub the faucets with steelwool..They looked all raggedy as all of the chrome wore off. Kitchen has no cutlery (you have to pay extra if you want some) and looks in bad shape. Our balcony had a beautiful view of the jungle and has some chairs and a small table but it’s SO piping hot all day that you can only sit there after the sun goes down. Maybe an umbrella and a rack to hang your swimwear would be fantastic. The food was nothing to write home about. Breakfast at RoMarley’s was okay, even though the lunch offerings weren’t great and kind of bland. But to even call ‘Al Mare’ an Italian retaurant is an insult to all Italians. Food was disgusting and cold and even though I almost didn’t eat anything, I got sick the next day. Waitstaff was wonderful though! Roomservice was terrible. Overall we had a great time as we came back three times to this hotel. We had some issues, which I won’t go into, but if Im honest I truly had a wonderful time, met some great people, hated all the influencers who were there for no reason at all..as this hotel certainly isn’t a party place. If you want a relaxed time with a beautiful ocean this is the place for you!

Plan to sit and wait This resort has potential but falls flat in the most epic fashion. The check-in and checkout process is unique because there is no dedicated desk. You have a seat in the lobby and wait for someone to assist you. Sitting and waiting is actually the running theme of this resort. The rooms are nice and equipped with a small kitchen however there was no utensils or kitchen equipment. Nothing. Not even a fork. So the kitchen is useless. There are three restaurants on the property and all are average at best. Some of the menus online do not match the menus given onsite (i.e. no one on staff even knew there was a published sushi menu online). It takes forever for your order to be taken and even longer to receive your food. And 10/10 something is missing or not prepared properly. The lobby bar is rarely staffed and The bar tender is not familiar with the bar menu posted online. The resort is obviously short staffed and everyone seems to be new. They provide the best service given the circumstances but it leaves a lot to be desired. I can't imagine that the few staff employed here will be here long because of the chaos and lack of structure. The icing on the cake for my wife and I was the checkout process. We previously paid for airport transfers (booked through the resort) and made our way to the lobby on time to checkout. We were told we had outstanding charges (for beverages) despite booking an all inclusive package and drinking the bottom shelf watered down drinks the entire time. In the 20 minutes it took to resolve an issue that was no fault of ours, the transportation left despite my wife speaking to the driver and informing him that we were attempting to checkout. The resort offered us nothing. No assistance, no number to call, no apology, only the suggestion that we should call a taxi. It really put the icing on an already "make the best of it" situation. I wouldn't recommend this resort to anyone and it will take a serious overhaul to restore it to it's former glory that those in previous reviews have spoken of.

Beautiful hotel with the BEST staff The hotel was just all in all absolutely amazing. A beautiful space in an amazing location with even more amazing staff. Everyone was so kind and attentive and I could not fault them at all. From the room service and room cleaning to the excursion rep and restaurant staff. A special mention to Moises, Ansel and Jesus who we had the most contact with who were just unmatched. So friendly and helpful with food and drink recommendations and booking of taxis. I would return time and time again because everything was just perfect snd we felt like royalty. We were also incredibly lucky with the weather while we were there which made it a million times more memorable. The pure vibes of the RoMarley cafe and the perfect mango mezcalita cocktails i would recommend this to everyone as a must stay location. A beautiful room very clean with a balcony facing where the sun set was perfect. Even when faced with deciding to go on an excursion on morning of the day and all trips being fully booked the excursion rep Yael went above and beyond to still get us to isla mujeres by ferry.
