Fort Walton Beach, Florida: White-Sand Beaches and Ancient History

A part of Florida's Emerald Coast, Fort Walton Beach is home to miles of beautiful white-sand beaches. It's said to have the region's whitest and cleanest sand; the uniformly oval shape of each grain causes a slight squeak when walked upon. Visitors to Fort Walton Beach can also expect to find championship golf courses and plentiful shopping in the Uptown shopping district.

Though the area's earliest permanent European settlers didn't arrive until 1821, Native American history here dates back 14,000 years. This history is documented at the Indian Temple Mound Museum, which features more than 1,000 artifacts of shell, bone, and clay, as well as one of the country's best collections of prehistoric ceramics. The Heritage Park & Cultural Center, which includes the Indian Temple Mound Museum, also covers the history of pirates, the American Civil War, and early settlers.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wonderful Stay at Four Points Sheraton – Fort Walton Beach We had such a wonderful stay here and would definitely return. The grounds are beautifully kept, with lush landscaping, plenty of shaded seating areas, and a layout that feels inviting and relaxed. The location is perfect — steps from the Gulfarium, a short walk to the Boardwalk with restaurants, bars, shops, and a coffee house, and just beyond that, the pier if fishing is your thing. The beach is classic Destin perfection — wide, soft, sugar-white sand with chair and umbrella service and showers for rinsing off after a swim. The beach is also dog friendly before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. (a great touch that isn’t advertised much). Honestly, that’s the only time of day you’d want to take dogs out anyway, since the sand gets far too hot for their paws midday. The pools aren’t flashy but have an elegant, old-Hollywood feel. The front pool near the lobby and breakfast area is heated, surrounded by lush greenery, and has plenty of loungers, tables, and umbrellas, with bathrooms nearby. The pool closer to the tiki bar and beach is quiet and relaxing — a perfect spot to nap or read. We stayed in a traditional courtyard-view room in the two-story buildings, and it was perfect for us with our dog. The rooms were quiet and comfortable, and the parking was right outside the door, which made loading, unloading, and dog walks so convenient. The deluxe rooms in the tower offer Gulf views and have garage parking underneath. Those rooms are very pretty if a Gulf view is a must, but we would happily book a courtyard room again for the convenience. Breakfast was a highlight — a nice variety with some items rotating daily, eggs cooked to order, and (my favorite) a little coffee pot left at your table if you ask, so hot refills are always ready. We also enjoyed meals at the property: the wedge salad and fries were standouts, and overall, the food quality was excellent for very reasonable prices (no “resort gouging” here). The staff made our stay even better. Denora made breakfast feel warm and welcoming, Luis was wonderful at the bar, and Kasey at the tiki bar kept the atmosphere fun and friendly. Everyone we encountered had a great attitude and added to the relaxed vibe. Overall, this hotel offers excellent value — beautiful grounds, comfortable rooms, delicious food, and a location that makes everything walkable. Add in the dog-friendly touches and great staff, and it’s an easy choice for our next trip to Fort Walton Beach.

Beachfront room is a must. Great pier views Older beach resort with everything you need to relax your day away. $100 resort fee so be prepared, but credited $25 per day of your stay toward food or drink. Great food too. 2 pools, one up to 5 ft by beach for littles, other is up to 8 ft. Family game room, fitness room, little market for last minute items. Bon Voy members get a free water or soda daily. Beachfront room worth the extra but if on a budget inside courtyard appears very family friendly. Beach chairs are 3rd party and run about $50 per day but a nice beach towel is really all you need.

Great stay We switched our reservation to 4 points after a rainy weather forecast. We got a 2 queen bed room w/ a balcony gulf view. So glad we made that switch. Room was very clean. Beach bar made great drinks. All the staff was super helpful and friendly. Would come back
