Hotel at a Glance: Gateway Inn

Located 1 mile from the western entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, the Gateway Inn occupies a tranquil spot in Colorado's high-country wilderness. The inn is a true family-run business—owners Tom and Debi designed and built the wooden lodge in 1999. With Rocky Mountain National Park surrounding the inn on three sides, it's easy to connect with the great outdoors during your visit.

  • Handmade log furniture can be found in each individually decorated guest room.
  • When it's warm outside, you can go hiking, biking, fishing, or golfing.
  • Watch the sunset over nearby Shadow Mountain Lake from the inn's back porch.
  • Relax: with a dip in the onsite hot tub (currently unavailable) or by lounging on the newly remodeled deck with fire-pits and mood lighting. Dinner is also available to be served on the deck.
  • Grab a bite at the full-service O-a Bistro offering dinners full of locally sourced and seasonal ingredients.

Grand Lake, Colorado: Western Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park

Nestled beneath snowcapped peaks, the town of Grand Lake is known as the Western Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. The charming village, dotted with quaint cabins and summer homes, sits adjacent to Trail Ridge Road, a 43-mile route that winds through the park, providing glimpses of mountain wildlife and dazzling views that stretch to Wyoming.

Grand Lake was named after the largest natural body of water in Colorado, which hugs miles of shoreline just north of the hotel. Here you can angle for brown trout and mackinaw, or take to the waters on a pontoon boat. Grand Lake's historical boardwalk evokes the Old West with rustic saloons, art galleries, and horse-drawn taxicabs.

Our stay was great. The staff was more than accommodating. Aside from food odors coming from the restaurant into our room and couldn't get free wifi, it was a very pleasant stay. Room was clean and a great view from our room.

Very overpriced for what you get Comments: The room, despite being one of the expensive options with a balcony, was pretty much adjacent to the restaurant and above the kitchen area, which meant it smelled like an old food truck with old, burnt cooking oil. While the room had a balcony, going outside made on almost sick with the stench from cooking – definitely not what we paid for and extremely overpriced. Make sure you do not get the noisy lower-floor rooms, as you can hear every proverbial pin drop in the rooms above all night. Outlook: Poor – if you want to view a car park and smell cooking all evening. Decor: Rustic and a bit quirky Desk & electrical sockets: desk present, though lacking any real useful or accessible electrical sockets and no USB charger ports. In-room safe: None Breakfast: not available.

relaxing Good hotel but sound carries especially in the morning. It was during the off season. The front desk and others were easy to work with.

Would stay again for RMNP entrance proximity Love Grand Lake! The lodge was average. The rooms were HUGE, the view of Mt. Baldy from our balcony was amazing, and the beer was cold. Front desk was less than helpful on most occasions. When we asked questions they didn’t really have good answers or “I don’t know”. The food was average for dinner and breakfast but the cooks/waiter/waitress did seem accommodating for food allergies which was nice and they all were very attentive. It is about a 20 min walk to downtown but coming back you have to go uphill. Very close to RMNP entrance and tons of hiking trails. They did have a hot tub and sauna, but we did not use but did see other patrons using them. We were there more for the national park than downtown so the lodge was perfect for our needs, it was clean and the view was nice. I would recommend this lodging for people wanting to experience the national park rather than downtown.
