Hotel at a Glance: Glacier Mountaineer Lodge

Lodged between five national parks, guests make camp at Glacier Mountaineer Lodge to take a rest and let their hiking boots air. They escape to the adventure-clad town of Golden to watch the rushing waters of Kicking Horse River pass beneath the pedestrian bridge or to the Golden and District Museum when they’re not in the glacier-capped mountains. At the hotel, they watch the sun set on the ski hills or mountains from their private balconies, or watch the flickers swell on their gas fireplaces.

  • Levels: Hikers trudge the long winding paths along the spines of mountains or strap-in to scale the face of Terminator Peak.
  • Gondolas: take mountain bikers into the alpine terrain to trek rock slabs, rollicking berms, and wooden ramps as they cascade back down 3,700 vertical feet to the village base.
  • The waters: Adrenaline junkies test their merit on the class III and IV waters of Kicking Horse River or watch as the river plummets down a 30-meter drop at the Wapta Falls.
  • Very bear-y: At the Grizzly Bear Interpretive Centre, rangers educate guests on the natural environment of grizzly bears and watch the feeding of Boo, a refuge grizzly.
  • Winter recreation The fun doesn’t stop when the temperature drops—experienced skiers and snowboarders hit the backcountry slopes thanks to heli-skiing, while nearby snow-mobile trails and tours lead explorers all across the Golden area.
  • The dish on dishes: The area boasts fine bistros and unique dining experiences, from the rustic decor of the mountainside Cedar House to the lodge-like ambiance of Eagle’s Eye Restaurant—Canada’s highest restaurant at 7,700 feet.

Golden, British Columbia: Gateway to Outdoor Adventure in the Rocky Mountain Trench

Golden is surrounded by not one, not three, but five national parks. To the west lies Glacier National Park, while to the east sit Yoho, Banff, and Kootenay. And Jasper National Park is in the north. As if that wilderness weren’t sufficient, the mighty Columbia River snakes through the town as well. Locals and visitors alike have their pick of just about any kind of outdoor adventure they can think of, from swimming and golf to rock climbing and rafting. In the winter, skiing, snowmobile, and cross-country trails abound, and since Golden is the birthplace of heliskiing—downhill skiing on trails accessed via helicopter—it’s not too hard to venture off-road.

Nearby Edelweiss Village, former home to the early 20th-century guides who helped hikers traverse the mountains, provides architectural interest with its six Swiss chalets. In town, the Kicking Horse pedestrian bridge draws attention as the longest freestanding timber-frame bridge in Canada. It also acts as a symbol of cooperation for the people of Golden.

Terrible Stay at Glacier Mountaineer Lodge - Not worth the price Booked a loft on the top floor. View overlooking parking lot and hot tub. Blinds didn't work (let light in from lighted parking lot). Carpet very very dirty, stained and ripped. Kitchen table very sticky. Problems with getting the door opened. Room was very outdated. The outside of the building looks good. Room inside not. Bathroom had shower curtain but no liner. Room not cleaned. We didn't stay in room very much given it was depressing. Will stay elsewhere next visit for sure. Very high nightly price for condition of room.

Off-Season Dud This lodge is for skiers; at least in off season, they seem to neglect the place. Blinds & windows did not work well, a cracked glass in the cupboard, dishwasher that was unemptied and broken, and architectural design so poor that several doors could not be fully opened. Very clean but otherwise felt like an inexpensive motel.

In the description of the room it was indicated about the view of the mountains, the river and the like. In fact, you will receive a room with a view of the parking lot with a puddle and a road immediately under the window, which would be doubly pleasant to sit on the balcony. You'd better find yourself another place.
