Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Nice affordable hotel on Fremont Street w/ great pool! Myself and a group of friends do an annual trip to Las Vegas and we we typically rotate each year from staying on the strip to staying on Fremont Street. So this year we decided to give Golden Nugget a shot. First of all, it was the most reasonably priced hotel in my opinion, especially for being right on Fremont. We had 2 rooms in the Carson Tower and my room in the Gold Tower. The rooms were spacious and clean. Granted the rooms were outdated and are in need of updating , BUT lets be honest when visiting Las Vegas you pretty much just need somewhere to sleep. The staff was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. One of the best highlights of staying at the Golden Nugget is the amazing pool. Its good sized and has a giant saltwater aquarium with different aquatic life including sharks and stingrays in the center of it, so you can literally swim right up to the glass and be face to face with a shark. It was enjoyable and relaxing, with that being said either get there early or later in the day because mid day the pool is packed, which is no big shocker. I only went between 6 and 8pm and the pool area was not nearly as busy. They even had a DJ set up poolside which was fun. They also have a giant hot tub which was nice BUT very warm for my liking. Inside of the Nugget you will find shopping, bars, restaurants and even a candy shop. It was also nice to have a Chick-Fil-A for a late night snack and Starbucks for some morning coffee. All in all I enjoyed my stay at the Golden Nugget and would recommend it for anyone looking for an affordable option that's no frills, clean and comfortable with great access to Fremont! I would stay there again.

Location and pool make this a great choice Great location, the rooms are big but spacious We got water every day which was nice. But online it said you had coffee in the room we had upgraded to a Carson suite and this was not the case. There is a Starbucks on site near our tower so it was ok, but obviously added cost. No fridge either. The pool is fab but if you want beds need to get there early or wait around later in the day for one to come free, The shark tank is fab the slide is super fun. The location is great for fremont street so we got around every where there easily. Really glad we did a couple of nights here would recommend very clean and tidy around the hotel.

Disappointed We were moved to an upgrade. I would not stay here again. This was too expensive and the pictures show what you get. We stayed in the Gold Tower. Besides needing to be remodeled the staff were not curt and surely. Loved Saltgrass restaurant this was the only saving grace.
