Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Dirty, Dingy and Disgusting Dirtiest, dingiest, most disgusting hotel I have ever visited and stayed. Was in Vegas for a convention for three days. Hotel is very dated and very dirty. In a bad part of town with many, unfortunately, homeless people on the streets. In and around hotel parking garage smelled of urine. Exterior of all hotel entrances were very dirty and unkept. My king room’s carpet was dirty and the bathroom tub didn’t drain properly and was chipped and rusting badly. Had a maintenance issue with the window blind and maintenance never came after calling to put in a ticket. I would never return to this property. Look elsewhere for a place to stay. If you need to be in the downtown Vegas area for some reason stay at the Circa which is leaps and bounds cleaner and nicer.

SUPER NICE STAY As my visit to Las Vegas comes to an end, I wanted to give a five star rating to the AWESOME staff at Golden Nugget. This go-around, we requested the Carson Tower, away from the noise of the Fremont Experience. We had the fabulous wahine from the Windward side of O’ahu (didn’t catch her name, but she worked Sunday 07/20 in the afternoon with another wahine from O’ahu). She checked us in and was so great, despite having to deal with a jackass guest before us (we saw him, he was yelling & rude af). Our rooms were perfect! No microwave or refrigerator, but ice machine close by works amazing! Bed comfortable, a/c perfect, bathroom great! Slept like a baby! Doorman from Maui - always helpful when we went in & out. All of them - super nice & fun. Las Vegas tourism is very down now and prices are high, so people will choose hotels carry. I would not hesitate to recommend the Golden Nugget, especially for those from the 808. Glad to know our transplanted Hawaiians continue to spread the aloha___ Many thanks to your staff!

If going to Vegas stay here Room in rush tower was clean and very nice. Resort is smaller than the strip but worth the money. Parking was easy, check in on a Sunday was longer than we thought but not to bad. Having a chik fil a on sight was bonus. We rented cabana at the tank pool, it was great and our attendant Sophie was phenomenal. She was on point with service and very friendly. Location was awesome for the stages. Rush tower seemed to be ok for the noise at night
