Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: Waterfalls, Beaches, and Centuries-Old Historical Sites

Situated on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is best known for its sun-kissed beaches. But the province has several breathtaking geographical features inland as well. Damajagua is a natural water park of sorts—it features 27 waterfalls flowing from limestone formations. Tour guides lead groups through the falls, and you can swim and occasionally slide down the natural water slides.

You can get an aerial view of Puerto Plata and the Caribbean Sea on a teleférico, or cable car. One of them climbs 2,565 feet to the apex of Mount Isabel de Torres, which is crowned with botanical gardens and a replica of Rio de Janeiro’s massive Christ the Redeemer statue. Take a scenic drive to Parque Histórico La Isabela and you’ll find the remains of a church as well as the ruins of a colonial village.

Another great holiday Just home from another wonderful holiday at Gran Ventana. Hurricane Melissa came through but north coast of DR was not hit. It is rare for north coast of DR to get hit because of mountains and the colder water of the Atlantic Ocean. There was some rain mostly at night but we never missed a beach day in two weeks. The second week the ocean was hot, a lovely turquoise blue with no sargassum. MCB was able to have several swims every day as he is much more mobile now than on our last trip in April. First week the Saona building was closed for updates to WiFi and television programming but when it reopened we were able to move to our favourite room a regular (superior) room on the second floor. If you have room request, send email to Marcos, Rooms Division Manager, about two weeks before arrival date and he will do his best to accommodate you, We had most of our meals in the main buffet but visited the a la cartes once a week. There have been a few new additions to the menu since our last visit but we love the Taste of the World buffet on Wednesdays. While we were there it was Reunion Month for repeat guests and there was special welcoming cocktail party one evening and beach party another evening. This visit the Humanitarian group, Shine the Light, were there. We have met the leaders, Wendy and Brent from Manitoba, many times over the years. They had 68 volunteers with them from all over Canada and they were building 5 houses near Puerto Plata . We also met our lady friends, the Sambuca ladies, 3 sisters and a daughter, from different parts of Canada. As well as spending time on the premium/royal section of the beach we also enjoyed some time in the Vintage Club for upgrade guests and would like to give special mention to Olvi and Santa and to Amble on the beach. Special mention to Raul, Ricky, Felix and Denny in the buffet for their great service, Thanks to Guest Services Manager, Solange and to General Manager, Oscar for another wonderful holiday.

Overcrowded, lack of amenities, not enough staff to deliver what they are supposed to offer. The property itself is lovely, but it’s definitely outdated and could use some serious upgrades, especially in the rooms. The bathtub didn’t drain properly, and you can see wear and tear everywhere. Although the rooms are clean, the ones on the first floor (where my group stayed) were pretty disappointing. For the price we paid, we expected better quality. There are no coffee pots in the superior rooms, and when we asked about it, the front desk staff were extremely rude. The pools were really nice and the bar staff were wonderful. Tip them well. The place was absolutely packed, and there weren’t enough dishes or staff to handle the crowds. This resulted in extremely poor service overall, especially during meal times. On the second night, I had to be switched rooms after a bloody cat fight broke out on my balcony. The new room had a great view, which made up for it somewhat, but the balcony door didn’t lock. I reported it, but nothing was done, which made me feel unsafe as a single female traveler. The mini bar also wasn’t filled for three days. I eventually had to go down to reception because I was completely out of drinking water. For an all-inclusive resort, that’s just unacceptable. On the positive side, the cleaning staff, bartenders, and restaurant staff were all incredibly kind and helpful they truly make the place run and deserve to be tipped well. If you’re Canadian, be prepared the resort is packed with French-speaking guests from Quebec. Many were loud, rude, and dismissive toward others, which made it hard to relax. Out of everyone there, only a handful of guests spoke English or Spanish. So be prepared. The beach, however, is absolutely beautiful calm waters, soft sand, and sunshine every day, exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t return here due to the overall atmosphere, the overcrowding, and the outdated rooms. But if that doesn’t bother you, and you just want the beach and sun, you might still enjoy it. ⭐ Overall Rating: 2 out of 5 stars.
