Ocean City, Maryland: Family-Friendly Boardwalk next to the Atlantic

Along Ocean City’s century-old boardwalk, you can savor wild-caught blue crab, play old-fashioned arcade games, and watch candy makers spin colorful saltwater taffy. The lively boardwalk, which stretches for 3 miles along Maryland’s eastern shore, helped earn Ocean City a spot on USA Today’s list of the "10 great places to have some fun on a boardwalk." Kids can ride a Ferris wheel and climb aboard one of the country’s oldest carousels at Trimper’s Amusement Park, a family-owned theme park open for more than 100 years.

Assateague Island National Seashore—a 37-mile stretch of salt marshes running from Ocean City down to Virginia—offers a peaceful reprieve from the boardwalk’s constant activity. The island’s famous wild horses gallop on the shores, and you can climb up a vintage, candy-striped lighthouse, or hike the seaside forests to spot birds, including great horned owls, ruby-crowned kinglets, and great blue herons.

Fam Beach Vacation The hotel is located at the quieter end of the boardwalk- about midway. It is a short walk to the beach and has outdoor pool. The indoor pool needs some better ventilation- the chlorine smell in there is overwhelming. The room is comfortable and has a nice little sink “kitchen” area. It is a bit of a walk to restaurants but overall a nice property.

Our vacation was completely ruined by a disturbing and racially charged interaction with a hotel staff member at the Grand Hotel in Ocean City. After calmly asking about the large Blue Lives Matter flag displayed prominently in the lobby — a flag known to many as a symbol of opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement and widely criticized for its racial and political implications — I was met with immediate hostility. Despite speaking in a respectful tone (with two witnesses present), the staff member falsely accused me of yelling, refused to give his name, and began aggressively escalating the situation without cause. He used profanities toward me, prompting me to say, “This is really unprofessional.” When I asked, “Are you asking me to leave the hotel just because I’m Black?” he responded by threatening to call 911 on me, even though I had done absolutely nothing unlawful and repeatedly asked what law I was supposedly violating. Even more troubling: when my wife spoke to him calmly in a separate interaction (with her own witnesses), he provided his name and then falsely accused me of trying to take the flag down — something that never happened. I had remained by the front desk the entire time and never touched the flag or left the area. At that point, we no longer felt safe. We packed up and left the hotel early, cutting our vacation short. This isn’t just about one incident. It’s impossible to ignore the broader context of racial profiling and use of force in Ocean City — including the nationally reported 2021 case where a Black teenager was tased by Ocean City police on the boardwalk for allegedly vaping. The same types of bias and dehumanization are still happening, and sadly, our experience is proof of that. We urge Black travelers — especially families and couples — to think carefully before booking here. We didn’t feel welcome, we didn’t feel safe, and we will not be returning to the Grand Hotel or Ocean City.
