Ocean City, Maryland: Family-Friendly Boardwalk next to the Atlantic

Along Ocean City’s century-old boardwalk, you can savor wild-caught blue crab, play old-fashioned arcade games, and watch candy makers spin colorful saltwater taffy. The lively boardwalk, which stretches for 3 miles along Maryland’s eastern shore, helped earn Ocean City a spot on USA Today’s list of the "10 great places to have some fun on a boardwalk." Kids can ride a Ferris wheel and climb aboard one of the country’s oldest carousels at Trimper’s Amusement Park, a family-owned theme park open for more than 100 years.

Assateague Island National Seashore—a 37-mile stretch of salt marshes running from Ocean City down to Virginia—offers a peaceful reprieve from the boardwalk’s constant activity. The island’s famous wild horses gallop on the shores, and you can climb up a vintage, candy-striped lighthouse, or hike the seaside forests to spot birds, including great horned owls, ruby-crowned kinglets, and great blue herons.

The Grand is GRAND! We had the pleasure of staying at this awesome hotel during Bike Week (Sept. 11-15) and it was perfect from beginning to end. The hotel is located on the boardwalk/21st which is perfect if you want to be on the boardwalk but away from alot of the noise. As we entered the hotel at about 1:00 pm, we were greeted by a friendly front desk clerk named Rosie. She let us know our room (partial view) wasn't ready but we'd receive a text when it became available. I asked if they had any complimentary upgrades and we were not granted one. Since it was nice outside, we decided to head out to the boardwalk to grab something to eat. When you stay at the Grand, you have food, drinks, shopping, a 24 hr deli, entertainment, etc. right on site which is a huge bonus. We grabbed pizza at their pizza place (located ON the boardwalk!) and it too was fabulous! We received a text about 3:00 stating our room was ready. Entering the room was a treat......it was HUGE with a huge balcony which gave us a lovely partial view of the boardwalk/ocean and Coastal Hwy. Not only was it huge, it was super CLEAN! It came with a rather large kitchenette which included a nice amount of counter space, sink, microwave, and small refrigerator but did not include any utensils, plates, silverware, cups, etc. Luckily, prior to travelling, I contacted the hotel and asked how well equipped the kitchens were and I was told they weren't which allowed me to pack a few things I thought we'd use while there (and we did!). We did not have our room serviced for the 4 nights we were there (our choice) but the very friendly housekeepers gave us clean towels each day. I had the opportunity to meet and chat with the manager (Bert) when I was checking out and he appreciated the positive feedback I relayed to him about our first time experience at his hotel. I don't know what Bert is doing at his hotel, but whatever it is, he's doing it right! Absolutely every person we came in contact with gave us WONDERFUL service, they appeared to take pride in their work and love their jobs. We all know service has been lacking everywhere over the last 5 or so years but not at The Grand! Keep up the great work Bert, you and your employees should be commended! We will be back! Thanks for a relaxing, stress free vacation!

The Grand is a lovely hotel with spacious rooms The location was convenient for us to walk to the pier for Oceans Calling. The Grand is a beautiful hotel with wonderful ocean views. The pizza parlor under the hotel is very good and they also have little shops to purchase sweatshirts, etc. The hotel is clean and the rooms are spacious. The staff was friendly and it was easy to check in and check out. At this location, the noise from the boardwalk is minimal. I am unsure if the pools were open because we did not check out the amenity this time of year. In the summer, the outdoor pool is refreshing and you can order a drink at the outside bar. We stay at this hotel often and it never disappoints.
