Playa del Carmen, Mexico: Trendy Beach Area and Diving Destination

Just across the sea from the island of Cozumel, Playa del Carmen has been called "the hippest city in all of the Yucatán Peninsula" by Lonely Planet. The laid-back beach bars and cafés have a way of converting vacationers into expats, but Playa's most compelling draw might be its cenotes—cavernous sinkholes filled with turquoise pools. The water in the cenotes is crystal clear, particularly at the lily-pad-dotted Xlacah cenote, where you can snorkel among schools of colorful fish.

To the south, you'll find preserved ruins of pre-Columbian cities. Tulum's crumbling temples are situated above a dramatic ocean bluff, and Coba's enormous pyramid rises between two lagoons. For a fun day trip, hop aboard the ferry to Cozumel, which docks at the pier east of Calle 1. There are about a dozen dive shops on Cozumel, and they offer trips offshore to the reefs that Jacques Cousteau declared some of the world's most beautiful.

Rude Staff, Animals everywhere - AVOID!!! This resort and staff sucked. There are animals everywhere, it comes and steals your food and personal items and it walks all over the grill and food areas. The staff is unfriendly and un-helpful. the resort is very large and you need a golf cart to get you from place to place. the drivers are careless. my mother who is older fell off as the driver did not wait for her to get back on as people get off and the staff wanted us to pay for help $200USD to get her medical help. they did not care. the bar staff is also very rude. they do not make your experience fun and exciting. spend your money somewhere else!

Awful place! I’m here right now and feel the need to warn people not to waste money staying here. The place is poorly managed with no atmosphere in most restraints. The beach is ok but the sea smells of sulphur. Some food is ok but in general it is poor. You have to queue at breakfast to get a table that isn’t made up. The bus service isn’t adequate for such a big resort as there are not enough places for everyone waiting in the queue. On the plus side I’m getting fitter and losing weight due to all the walking. No welcome drink on arrival and many staff are rude. Some however are very helpful. Beach bar staff are really good. Japanese restaurant was good. Been here 4 days, both had stomach issues already and I can honestly say I’m looking forward to going home … and I live in the UK!! Quite frankly appalled by the place!

Beware of poor food quality and roaches We stayed at this resort in the first week of July 2024 for a family reunion. We booked four rooms, and given the cost, the basics were sorely lacking. The property is beautiful, and the amenities are amazing. But that's where it all ends. The food at the buffet and a la carte restaurants was terrible. Given you are in Mexico, you would expect at least that cuisine to be good. But it wasn't. We were staying in the Family Club and reported roaches to the front desk after our first night there. They offered to fumigate the room or move us to a different room in the same building. We were concerned that moving us to a different room in the same building meant the roaches would still be there, as it's all shared ventilation. When we went back to our room a couple of hours later, they had fumigated without our permission with all our suitcases open. We were baffled by this and asked why they thought this was acceptable, to no satisfactory response. By the following morning we saw even bigger roaches show up, to which the response was, the fumigation must has brought them out. I had no words at that point... We eventually paid an upgrade fee to be moved to a completely different area of the resort, the Platinum Club. We had no issues there, but if that's what it takes to have a clean room at this resort, then why are you offering the Family Club at all? When I spoke to management about recouping the upgrade fee, I was informed that they have a third party pest control company that has confirmed there are no roaches. Dear Management, roaches come out at night, not during broad daylight. The management team of this hotel needs to realize that the rooms and food are a big part of the vacation experience. While the property and amenities are great, having roaches and bland food just doesn't cut it.
