Parry Sound, Ontario: Lakeside Recreation in Ontario Wilderness

Parry Sound sits along Georgian Bay, making the town a natural playground for kayaking and sailing to the bay's 30,000 islands, especially in warmer months. In the autumn, the town is a pleasant place to observe fall foliage. In the winter, snow covers the surrounding trails, making it a scenic spot for snowmobiling or snowshoeing. When the lake freezes, resort staffers pack up the boats for the season and break out the ice skates, helping guests practice their Salchows on the brisk, natural-ice surface.

The unspoiled natural setting lends a rustic feel to downtown Parry Sound—a smattering of homey restaurants are worth a visit for their Georgian Bay fish and chips, smoked fish, and a selection of craft beers.

Great Location but Understaffed and Overpriced Spent two nights at the resort in a "suite" at the end of August (1 king bed, 1 pull-out sofabed). The private beach area was great - lots of chairs and selection of boats/paddleboards for use. Because the resort was a little quieter, it was easy to access the equipment. The compliments end there. The room we were given (again, a "suite") was pretty run down. The TV was not working when we arrived (staff tried initially to say this was a service provider issue, but only our room was affected?). We were told no one was able to look at the TV until the next day, so it was broken for over half our stay and when it was finally fixed, it was confirmed that the wires were broken (through a crudely cut out hole in the drywall). The phone was also broken (no one could hear me speaking), so I needed to walk to the front desk every time there was an issue. This was never fixed. Although the room had a sofabed, I realized when pulling out the bed the first night, that there were no sheets provided (just a very old comforter and some pillows), so apparently I was meant to sleep on a bare mattress. The next morning, I asked the front desk for bedsheets, to which I was told someone would bring them. Several hours later, someone came to the door, threw a plastic bag to my daughter and ran off. When I opened the bag, it was....towels and shampoo. Given the choice of going back to the front desk (because, no phone), or sleeping on the bare mattress, I slept on the couch (not pulled out). Generally, the suites are lackluster: several lightbulbs burned out/flickering, screen doors were damaged, the flooring was old and uneven in parts, and there didn't seem to be any AC or fan in the living area (where I slept). For the price, people are much better off saving their money and getting a basic room. The staff were all nice enough, but it was clear the place was understaffed (i.e. 1 person working as server/hostess/dishwasher at the restaurant and no maintenance people), which led to mistakes and slow service. The food at the restaurant was great, but service was also painfully slow. After reading all this, if you still decide to book here, do NOT use a third party. I was told at check out that I couldn't get any kind of compensation because I booked with Expedia, then the hotel management refused to respond to Expedia after they tried to contact them, so I got no direct acknowledgement or compensation from the hotel for this experience.

Great Service, Cool vibe Jesus, Heather, Tony and Angela were the cat's meow! Great place, cool vibe. These people worked hard. The resort was a bit understaffed but these people made up for it.

Choice Hotel Customer Service is HORRIBLE I booked my stay via choice hotels customer service call centre and got an email confirmation for a specific room. When I showed up I got a room that was not even close and told that was what was booked. Choice Hotels customer service was horrible and did nothing to rectify the situation. The offered no compensation and the hotel manager did their best to get something done. I would never recommend staying at a choice hotel because if they mess up they will do nothing to help you and leave you with a ruined trip. Worst hotel experience every and I stay over 25 nights a year in hotels a year.
