Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Sandy Beaches, Golf Courses, and Classic Amusement-Park Rides

Myrtle Beach is the crown jewel of South Carolina's Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of white-sand beaches along the Atlantic seaboard that draws surfers, fishers, and kayakers. The city was named one of the best vacation spots in the United States for a family by USA Today, in part because of its wooden boardwalk, which stretches for more than a mile and buzzes with carnival games and amusement-park rides. Hop into the SkyWheel Ferris wheel’s gondolas, surrounded by more than a million LED lights, for a panoramic view of the city below.

Less than 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach, the tiny fishing village of Murrells Inlet provides a tranquil contrast to the boardwalk's hustle and bustle. At Brookgreen Gardens, more than 2,000 sculptures stand amid sprawling floral gardens and massive, moss-covered oak trees that have been around for centuries. Murrells Inlet is also home to the Tom Fazio–designed TPC Myrtle Beach golf course, 1 of nearly 100 courses in the area that helped Myrtle Beach earn its title as the seaside golf capital of the world.

Will Return in the Future We arrived at the Grande Cayman Resort at check-in time, and the front desk employees worked quickly and politely to check us into our room. Upon arriving, we found that housekeeping was still working but assured us she was only a few minutes from finishing. After no more than ten minutes, we were allowed into our room. A pro to this resort is that the room opens onto the parking garage. Our room was on the eighth floor, and we could park our vehicle right outside our door, making it easy to unload and load luggage. The bonus was that even though several families were on our floor, parking spaces were always available. Heck, we got the same space every day. Also, we never noticed any noise from the parking garage in the room. We found the room exceptionally clean and orderly. It was a three-bedroom suite on the eighth floor. There is a kitchen with a refrigerator, stove, microwave, and dishwasher. Most of the plates and dishes that guests would need are available. Between the kitchen and living room was a dining room table with seating for six. The living room has a couch that pulls out into a bed and two comfortable armchairs that look out the large sliding glass window to the ocean. A large TV to the front right of the armchairs was on little for the four days we stayed. The primary bedroom consists of a dresser that easily fits our clothing for the week, but if more room is needed, hanging areas and shelves in the closet lead to the spacious primary bathroom. The bathroom has a sink with plenty of counter space for a couple to spread out. The walk-in shower is good. It would be nice if there were a niche for shampoo and body wash bottles. The little wire rack hanging from the shower head is too small to hold anything more significant than travel size. The king-size bed was comfortable and positioned so guests could lie down and look out at the ocean. Another TV was on the dresser in the bedroom. Like the one in the living room, this TV only watched one night. We preferred to read while listening to the surf crash outside the bedroom slide. There is a spacious balcony with six chairs and a side table accessible from both the primary suite and the living room. When staying in Myrtle Beach, we plan on spending most of our time on the balcony, so we bring our own chairs so I can talk about the comfort of the hotel chairs provided. They are plastic stackable chairs. The suite we stayed in has two more bedrooms and one more bathroom. One bedroom has twin beds and faces out to the public walkway/garage, and the second room has a queen bed. Our stay included vouchers for breakfast in Due South at 72nd. We have a place we usually go to get breakfast while in Myrtle Beach, but on the first day, we stayed on-site and used the vouchers. We were pleasantly surprised. The voucher was for a breakfast buffet. This buffet had scrambled eggs, cinnamon, and sugar French toast sticks. Sausage, bacon, sausage gravy, grits, a make-your-own waffle station, donut holes, a variety of muffins, and cereals. The only extra cost was for juice. We noticed most people stopped at the Starbucks in the lobby for a beverage. With the quality of the breakfast, we ended up eating on the property two of the three mornings we were in town. My only complaint about my stay at the Grande Cayman Resort was that hotel guests were not allowed in the pool area before nine am. I have stayed at many resorts along the Grand Strand, and this is the first time I have been told that the pool area is off-limits. Usually, I will go down in the morning and set up my camera equipment (camera and tripod) to get sunrise photos. Still, the morning I was doing this, resort staff told me that no admittance was allowed before the pool opened. I was instructed to go to the public beach access. I have mobility issues that make walking on the sand difficult, so I returned to my balcony and took photos from there. This rule should be reevaluated in the future. And I will be honest: I was told the pool deck was off-limits because cleaning would be happening, making it unsafe for guests to be in the pool area. Shortly after the pools opened at nine, I went down to get in the hot tub, and it looked like it had not even been clean. Cigarettes and bugs were floating in the water. Our stay at the Grande Cayman Resort coincided with the early start of Spring Break on the Grand Strand. We usually visit the Grand Strand in the off-season from mid-September to November and late February to the end of March. Due to scheduling, we were late this year, and it showed. It may be because of how the property is built at the Grande Cayman Resort, but the yelling and screaming from the pool carried on, and at times, it sounded like we had teenagers in our room with us. My wife was told by one of the employees that due to some issues out of the resorts’ hands that resulted in a lot of cancelations during one of the busier times of the year for resorts along the Grand Strand, the Grande Cayman Resort took in high school softball and baseball teams that were in town to play at the Cal Ripken Experience and many of the regulars were not happy with the situation. This was our first stay, so we do not know what it is typically like, but we did decide that we had a nice enough time that we would like to stay here again.

DO NOT stay at the Savoy - part of Grande Cayman We decided to stay in the Savoy instead of the main portion of the Grande Cayman. Factors that persuaded us to spend more money on the Savoy were a private parking spot, private pool and a smaller building. It was close to where my son was staying with his team. We checked in and were told that the elevator was not working. That was not pleasant news seeing that we were on the 5th floor and my son just had major knee surgery in February and was on crutches. We also spoke with the manager at the time and she said that she would keep us updated and make an adjustment to the room cost at a later point. She kept her word. By the end of the day the problem was fixed and she had processed an adjustment on the account. I thought that the problems were over and we could move on with 6 restful days. I am writing this on a Sunday and the pool has been closed since Wednesday. I called the desk on Thursday and was told that they would check with maintenance and get back to me. Nobody ever got back to me. There has been some sort of work going on Wednesday through Friday. The parking lot has been blocked with yellow tape, not allowing access in or out. That is tough when traveling to and from baseball games. The work is loud and constant which makes afternoon naps difficult after a day at the beach. I called about our TV not working. I was told that a trouble ticket would be put in. That has not been fixed for 3 days. My wife had to contact the virtual assistant 3 times for a trach pickup.. I would like to provide some balance and speak about the good things. First of all - Janel, the manager, took care of the only issue that she knew about from us with a credit. The view is amazing. Beds are comfortable. Kitchens seem to have older, but functional, appliances allowing for some stay at home meals. The showers have good water pressure and hot water. The gift shop and pool bars (in the main resort) are staffed by kind people and the prices and selections are reasonable. I just can't help but feel deceived. When making a selection on in and out private parking and private pool access it really is a hassle to have those things not available. I have had hotel representatives contact me by phone or email prior to arrival and let us know about work that would be done or amenities that would not be available. That gives you the time to decide if it is worth it to stay there. I had zero knowledge ahead of time that we would be missing these features. ALSO, there was no attempt to communicate while we were here what the progress was. The TV was the simple issue too. If you can't swim and your car is trapped somewhere, people typically like to watch some tv - especially March Madness. They easily could have sent maintenance or swapped a tv. Instead they chose to ignore the problem when they had already provided inferior accommodations. This may not be my worst stay in a hotel, but it is definitely bottom 3. I have talked to all families on my son's baseball team and 2 have had some major issues. The difference is that they were given new rooms at another complex or a very deep discount on their price. There are many other options in Myrtle Beach. Find another place than the Savoy. And, since it is run by Grande Cayman - stay away from them too.

Great Customer Service and Comfortable Stay Our stay was comfortable. There were some things I feel can occur anywhere you stay and we ran into, i.e smell of pot when trying to enjoy the balcony or keeping the sliding glass doors open, hearing the cars come and go throughout the late hours of the night, and children yelling and running up and down the halls. The staff were all friendly and accommodating. We would stay again.

Exceeded My Expectations! I don’t often write reviews, but after staying at this resort, I felt compelled to share my experience. I’ve traveled extensively for business, accumulating over 2,500 room nights, so I’m no stranger to hotel stays. That said, the service I received here was truly exceptional. From the front desk to the restaurant and housekeeping staff, every team member went above and beyond to ensure my stay was comfortable and seamless. The hotel was spotless, and it was clear that it’s very well managed. This year marked my annual golf trip with friends, and I noticed a significant improvement in the level of service compared to previous visits. It made our trip all the more enjoyable! Kudos to the staff for creating such a welcoming and professional environment. Great work, and I’ll certainly be returning for next year’s trip!
