Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Sandy Beaches, Golf Courses, and Classic Amusement-Park Rides

Myrtle Beach is the crown jewel of South Carolina's Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of white-sand beaches along the Atlantic seaboard that draws surfers, fishers, and kayakers. The city was named one of the best vacation spots in the United States for a family by USA Today, in part because of its wooden boardwalk, which stretches for more than a mile and buzzes with carnival games and amusement-park rides. Hop into the SkyWheel Ferris wheel’s gondolas, surrounded by more than a million LED lights, for a panoramic view of the city below.

Less than 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach, the tiny fishing village of Murrells Inlet provides a tranquil contrast to the boardwalk's hustle and bustle. At Brookgreen Gardens, more than 2,000 sculptures stand amid sprawling floral gardens and massive, moss-covered oak trees that have been around for centuries. Murrells Inlet is also home to the Tom Fazio–designed TPC Myrtle Beach golf course, 1 of nearly 100 courses in the area that helped Myrtle Beach earn its title as the seaside golf capital of the world.

Stayed here twice-different visit each time Stayed in July & August. Our first room was bright & cheery & very clean. The second time the room was same motif but beat up, but clean. THE GOOD- Quiet at end of hall ( the first visit), Air conditioning worked great first time, second time I was warm at night. You get clean towels, toilet paper & garbage emptied if needed. There’s a broom & pan that was handy bc of all the sand we drug in. The beach was nice although a hike to get to. Having the pool snack bar & restaurant inside hotel & Starbucks was very nice & both had good food and very good service. Snack bar over pool got very busy & the people worked their butts off! Very very pleasant wherever we went in the hotel. Great bartenders too!!! Servers in all places were very friendly & kind & efficient as they could be. Halls are kept spotless of garbage & clean, as were the elevator areas. THE BAD- We had to walk a lot…..we navigated just fine but if you have any mobility issues everything you have to get to is a hike. Parking in the evening was rough & we usually walked a lot to get back to our room. It was me & my adult daughter which could navigate fine but my husband would not have been able to do it. Ice machines were usually broken but daughter would go hunting at night for a working machine! Rooms evidently are hit & miss…. the 2nd visit our room was pretty beat up ( still clean tho), each morning we were awoken by service delivering towels & necessities until I started to write notes & post them on our door!!! We stayed 5 days both trips & linens were not changed & sand was usually in our beds! No nice blankets they’re very flimsy & daughters bed was made by a flat sheet not fitted & each morning her bottom sheet was in disarray! Last two mornings we were woken by the sound of screw guns & pounding on both sides of our room it seemed. Obviously they were updating the room or fixing things but it was very inconsiderate! We love to sleep in a bit on vacay & this visit we weren’t able to. Both times tv access were different & first time our tv didn’t work it kept scanning for a signal. Second time wasn’t a smart tv & there were no shows/movies to watch. Now…. The pool was inundated with adults & kids. There was no way during both stays either of us were going to go in the pool! NO! On Fridays it seems its families go wild at the pool! No one bothers anyone…. It’s just we were there for a relaxing vacay & you wouldn’t find it here!!!! Next visit we will head to N Myrtle where I guess it’s a bit more “ adult& quiet” maybe better clientele. I was very surprised the second visit. The rooms need work. But obviously the employees of the entire place work very hard at keeping the grounds clean, hallways clean, public restrooms, restaurants….. everywhere was clean. The employees everywhere were kind, and friendly. Made you feel very welcomed. They should value the employees bc they all work hard & it shows. All in all for my daughter & I to return a second time it was pleasurable. Second visit differs from first but we had fun both visits. If you can over look some flaws of the rooms then you’ll be ok. We had an ocean view room and we had to peer over the balcony to see the water. Not worth the extra money they charge per day! From walking by the Oceanfront rooms & looking in the windows ( not a peeper! Drapes were open!!) those rooms all look very nice & updated. BUT all those rooms have halls that are outside near garage area which I would think could be noisy depending on time of year you stay!

Don’t stay here We stayed at Grand Cayman Resort with our baseball team, and it was a complete disaster from start to finish. This hotel should not be recommended for families — especially not for youth tournaments like Ripken. The property was dirty and chaotic. The parking garage served as a hangout for people drinking and smoking, which we had to walk our kids through every day. Several rooms in our group had serious issues: • One family had an AC unit so loud they couldn’t sleep. • Another didn’t receive clean towels and found the room dirty upon arrival. • One family had cockroaches in their bathroom. • Another had no hot water the entire stay. • One room had a broken bed. • There was constant cigarette smoke outside certain rooms. • One family’s room was left unlocked by staff after towels were delivered. • And twice, a guest’s door was blocked from the outside in the morning. We brought all of this to management’s attention during our stay. They acknowledged the issues and promised to follow up — but they never did. Nothing changed. This is not a safe, clean, or family-appropriate place to stay. If you’re here for a tournament, avoid this place completely

Grand Cayman “Resort” We stayed here with our baseball team and their families, and I genuinely have no idea why this place is listed as a recommended hotel on the Ripken website. Maybe it was a typo? Calling it a “resort” is generous — it’s really more of a motel with ocean views. Most rooms are accessed directly from the parking garage, which also doubles as a social club. Right outside our room, people were drinking, smoking, and turning the garage into a pre-game party zone. Not exactly what you want to walk your kids through on the way back from a game. The hallways (if you can call them that) were dirty, one of the families in our group found a cockroach in their bathroom, and the overall vibe was definitely not family-friendly. The crowd leaned more Spring Break than travel baseball. There were a couple of bright spots — the beach access is easy and the lobby restaurant wasn’t bad. But that’s about where the positives end. There are much better, cleaner, and more family-appropriate places to stay in Myrtle Beach. If you’re here for a tournament and looking for a place to relax between games, this isn’t it. Save yourself the surprise and book elsewhere. The purpose of this review is simply to help other families avoid being misled. We relied on a recommendation, and it didn’t match the experience at all. Hopefully this helps you make a more informed choice.

Budget hotel, you get what you pay for It's a budget hotel/resort and you get what you pay for. The front desk staff was nice and checked me in quickly. The rooms looked like they had been recently refreshed with furniture and a nice paint job, but they missed fixing little things like a loose tile, part of the a/c was broken, and just generally wear and tear that could use some maintenance. I really enjoyed being walking distance from the beach and the pools were great as well. If you read the fine print on the website there is an extra resort fee and housekeeping fee. I understood the resort fee, since there were extra "resort like" amenities. However if I am paying an extra fee for housekeeping, I would expect housekeeping services to come every day to clean the room. It seemed as though they came sporadically and only bothered to empty the trash and put a stack of towels in the room. I chose this property due to cost and the Brittain Rewards program advertised on their website. Beware, you will have to sit through a timeshare presentation to get those rewards.
