Birmingham, Alabama: Civil-Rights History in Cultural Hub

Birmingham was a hotbed of activity during America’s civil rights movement in the 1960s. Marches and other protests against segregation regularly took over the streets; one such demonstration, in 1963, led Martin Luther King Jr. to write his famous Letter from Birmingham Jail. These acts ultimately led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended racial segregation in schools and other public places across the nation. You can learn more about the city’s role in the movement at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute downtown.

The Birmingham of today is a thriving, diverse cultural hub where new and old intersect. Sleek shopping complexes share sidewalks with historic landmarks, such as the circa-1927 Alabama Theatre and the impressive Vulcan, the largest cast-iron statue in the world. Downtown, you’ll find funky art galleries next door to antique shops, lively nightclubs just down the street from historic churches, and restaurants serving hearty Southern dishes alongside James Beard–recognized ones. The walkable Five Points South neighborhood has a particularly high concentration of award-winning restaurants. For a dose of nature, head south of downtown to the popular Birmingham Zoo and the adjacent Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Crowded area, dirty room Super crowded area. Room was dirty, beds stained, blankets stained, couch stained, carpet unswept. Room felt damp. Overall not good experience. Traveling through to land in Florida for vacation. We always stay in Hilton hotels and this has been a worse for us.

Location! Pros: Water pressure, cleanliness, comfortability, water temperature, staff was extremely nice and helpful, breakfast options were delicious, price was fair, working appliances, location, location, location!!! Cons: No one answers the phones after 8 pm. Called for 45 minutes straight the weekend i stayed. I was at the time 4 weeks post-op from hip surgery, so i tried to call and ask my need, before trying to make an unnecessary trip to ask in person. So this was kind of concerning. I would come back for more stays. I enjoyed it!

Horrible horrible - do not book here! Id put a zero but cannot. Gravy - I drove in, had reservations. Check in went smoothly, went to room 327, dirty, never cleaned, see pics. Took all my stuff back to the desk, got a little attitude from the front desk lady. Given another room 227, keys wouldn't work. Door looked like it had been kicked in at some point. Went back down stairs. Popped the keys on the counted while calling Hilton Honors #, front desk rep became nasty and loud. I left - booked somewhere else. I appreciate Hilton while traveling - this was a dump, poor attitude by desk rep. Putting this on our corp website, not to book this hotel. HORRIBLE HILTON!
