Manhattan’s Financial District: Wall Street, Skyscrapers, and the 9/11 Memorial
Once the sole province of day traders and bankers working frenetic jobs at the New York Stock Exchange and on Wall Street, the Financial District has attracted its fair share of full-time residents in recent years. Today, more than 56,000 people live in the neighborhood, which borders Battery Park on the southern tip of Manhattan.
The population boom has helped expose the neighborhood’s occasionally overlooked cultural attractions. At the eastern edge of Fulton Street, the revitalized South Street Seaport historic district is home to some of the oldest architecture in downtown Manhattan as well as a fleet of renovated sailing ships and an up-close view of the Brooklyn Bridge. Back on Wall Street, the New York City Police Museum provides an interactive, in-depth look at the history of the NYPD.
Of course, the Financial District was once home to the World Trade Center towers, which were destroyed in the attacks of September 11, 2001. Where the Twin Towers once stood, six new skyscrapers are being built in their place, including One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the western hemisphere. A memorial to the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the attacks is now open for visits, along with a museum.
