Douglas, Wyoming: Distinctive Small Town near Ayres Natural Bridge
Douglas is the proud birthplace of the jackalope, a fixture of American folklore. The mythical animal was conceived in the 1930s, when two local brothers—hunters and taxidermists—grafted a set of antlers onto a jackrabbit carcass and sold it to a Douglas hotel. Today, jackalope statues around town nod to the brothers’ legendary creation. Tourists can even snag a jackalope hunting permit, usable “on June 31st, between sunrise and sunset only.” (Good luck finding that day on any calendar.)
For one week in August of each year, the Wyoming State Fair takes over Douglas. Spectacles include professional bull-riding and rodeo competitions, live music, livestock shows, carnival games, and a demolition derby. Something else worth seeing nearby: the Ayres Natural Bridge, a rock formation carved over eons by LaPrele Creek.
