Wichita, Kansas: Air Capital of the World and Cultural Hub

Mulvane lies about 17 miles south of Wichita, the largest city in Kansas. If you’ve ever traveled in an airplane, you probably have Wichita to thank. Known as the “Air Capital of the World,” it has played a pivotal (and ongoing) role in the field of aircraft manufacturing, churning out planes for Cessna, Boeing, Learjet, and many others. The Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers cut through the middle of town; they’re lined with parks, biking and jogging paths, and some of Wichita’s best cultural attractions. You can catch a musical or a performance by the Wichita Symphony at the riverfront Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center.

A few blocks from where the rivers split lie the Wichita Art Museum and Old Cowtown Museum, a living-history spot that transports you back to the 1870s, when Wichita was just a small cattle town. While you’re here, head next door to walk through the gardens at Botanica. The 17-acre complex brims with roses and burbling fountains, and has a special area for butterflies.
