Edgartown, Massachusetts: Historic Homes and Picturesque Harbor on Martha's Vineyard
Established in 1642, Edgartown takes up nearly a third of Martha's Vineyard, spanning an idyllic stretch of seafront on the island's southeast shore. Its nearness to the ocean helped the town establish itself as a hub for whalers in the 18th century. Downtown you'll find several ship captains' homes—elegant Greek Revival and Victorian clapboard houses fringed with palm and oak trees.
In many ways, Edgartown is the quintessential New England beach town (it was featured in Jaws), especially in warmer months, when tourists come to sail in the harbor, eat fresh-caught seafood, and eat homemade ice cream. Main Street leads right to the shore, where you can tour the Edgartown Lighthouse from May to October.
Chappaquiddick Island—or Chappy, as it's known locally—is a short ferry ride from Edgartown. With just one main road and few businesses, Chappaquiddick has an untouched feel to it. Three large areas have been set aside for nature and wildlife conservation, and they're full of Japanese gardens, exotic foliage, and ponds. Ferries operate year-round, weather permitting.
