Hotel at a Glance: Hassayampa Inn

Few hotels can claim to be as integral to their communities as the Hassayampa Inn. When it was being built in the 1920s, hundreds of townspeople bought $1 shares in the hotel to help fund its construction, giving them personal stakes in its success. The hotel went on to become a cornerstone of the community and is on the National Register of Historic Places today.

  • Southwest style is sprinkled throughout the hotel, from the lobby's glazed tile floors and hand painted ceilings to the warm tones of the guestrooms.
  • The onsite restaurant & lounge, Peacock Dining Room & Glass Bar, serves three meals per day; you can order southwest cuisine from lemon soufflé pancakes to prime rib. In addition, there's a nightly happy hour with live entertainment.
  • Famous guests include: Clark Gable, D. H. Lawrence, Georgia O'Keeffe, and more recently, Josh Brolin and Miles Teller.
  • Explore the outdoors on nearby hiking trails (more than 450 miles of them) or by taking a kayak out on Watson Lake or Goldwater Lake.

Prescott, Arizona: Historical Mountain Town Encircled by Wilderness

Prescott maintains small-town charm with a Wild West touch. Across the street from the courthouse plaza you’ll find shops, museums, antique stores, as well as the saloons of Whiskey Row—a historical block of bars once frequented by notorious outlaws and cowboys. Push through the swinging doors of the Palace Saloon and you can sit at a bar where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday were known to wet their whistles.

There are many outdoor activities here as well. Trek up the steep paved paths of iconic Thumb Butte and pause at the summit for panoramic views of the areas that's surrounded by four nation forests, four lakes and ten golf courses. Watson Lake Park is a popular spot for kayaking and fishing. Many families favor the park’s short hiking trails through rocky, high-desert landscapes.

Historic and creepy! Copying and pasting from my google review! I stayed on the third floor for just one night with my husband. The hotel is clearly historic, but it’s beautifully maintained, and the customer service was excellent. Truly top notch. That said, I had no idea this place had a haunted reputation or ghosts until after I experienced two very unsettling things. Early in the morning, just before my husband left for a conference, I experienced sleep paralysis. I felt two hands gripping my wrists tightly and refusing to let go. The fingers felt slender, like a woman’s hands. Eventually, I was able to break out of it, but it left me super shaken. Later, while showering alone, I saw a shadow pass across the opening of the curtain. I tried waving my arm to recreate it, but the shadow never returned and what I had seen moved in a totally different direction. It really freaked me out. I ended up waiting in the lobby and outside the hotel until my husband came back. Only afterward did we learn about the hotel’s haunted history. The experiences were not for me but I know plenty of people might find that kind of thing thrilling or intriguing. I’m giving four stars because of the wonderful staff and how well the hotel is kept up. It’s a charming, historic property… just maybe a bit too spirited for my taste.

So pleased with our stay... The hotel is beautiful and the staff were so pleasant and attentive. The hotel is old so the floor may creak a bit and the bathroom fixtures are not modern but it is an experience worth every penny. Air conditioning worked great.

Great stay! Excellent historic hotel. Room and bathroom are definitely small, but I knew that going in and it us an old hotel. The beds are super comfortable, and the air was cold. The fan can be set to run continuously. Lobby was very cool, as was the bar. We had drinks outside on the relaxing patio and listened to a fantastic guitarist play a selection of pop, jazz, blues, and old rock tunes. The employees were all super nice. If you need the elevator, staff has to operate the old time elevator. Just call from the room if you are going down. They are happy to help at any time. One note of concern would be that the door between connecting rooms allowed conversations to be easily heard. Luckily, the people next to us were quiet after 8ish, and we had no problems. The fan from the AC kept out almost all noises, which is why we kept it on. We loved the old time feel, location is walking distance to whiskey row. Definitely would recommend!
