Key West, Florida: Dazzling Sunsets, Six-Toed Cats, and Cuban Culture

Located just off Florida's southernmost tip and north of Cuba, the island of Key West is undoubtedly the most famous of the Florida Keys. Frommer's calls it "the land of the eternal vacation." Most tourists come to Key West's gulf-side beaches to snorkel, surf, or fish, but no trip to Key West is complete without a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where the author lived, worked, and kept his six-toed cats. More than 50 descendants of those famous felines still prowl the grounds of the museum to this day.

At nighttime, locals and visitors alike converge on the Mallory Square Dock to watch the sun dip below the Gulf of Mexico, casting swaths of deep orange and pink against the horizon. The spectacle is so breathtaking that it inspires a sunset celebration each night. The dock comes to life with traveling psychics, one-man bands, and food vendors serving fresh-squeezed lemonade and plantain chips.

A great place to stay Wonderful hotel with Cuban theme. Staff was great especially Chris the manager. Lite bites and fish tacos were nicely prepared. The room was well appointed and had private balcony with two chairs and small table. We were on the first floor and had a view of the bay. We definitely will make this an annual visit. Dan and Wendy

Hostile Havana Cabana This is advertised as adults only but it is NOT! False advertisement! Kids are in the pools and hammocks, large parties of families taking up lounging spaces. I'm a school teacher that saved up all year and specifically wanted adults only vibe for my vacation. The hotel decor and pool are really cool. The shuttle is an added bonus. The housekeeping staff was exceptional but..... They make it difficult to enjoy food and beverage facilities. There was often no one at the bar to get drinks or order food from . There is no ice machine to get ice for your room even though they provide an ice bucket. They make you get it from the bar which may not be attended. No coffee available in the front lobby and nobody at the bar to provide it at 7 am. The music playing from the hotel pool to the Cuban Lounge was the same everywhere, Spanish club music from 2000. I was looking forward to a Cuban feel but the music left it feeling like a cheap Cancun resort. The staff (Gabby)at the pool was rude and accused me of drinking and eating snacks that were not bought from them. I did have a grocery bag of items that a friend had picked up for me when she went to the store. I had them stored under my lounge chair until I went back up to my room. Even if there is a rule of no outside food and beverage, I shouldn't be attacked for it if I'm not consuming it and I'm a guest that have paid you $1500 dollars with resort fees tacked on. I even apologized and took my bag right up and found her again and apologized for confusion. But even the next day, when I had just an ice bucket in my hand and I asked the food and beverage manager where I could find an ice machine, her response was " YOU MAY NOT FIX YOUR Own DRINKS AT THE POOL" ! I told her I just want ice for my room and not to worry, i wouldn't be. She was sooooo rude and told me I would have to ask the bartender for ice. So, then I have to wait for 3 other people ahead of me to order and get their drinks prepared just to get my ice bucket filled so we have ice water for our hotel room. What an inconvenience! I went to the front desk and spoke to 3 different people about my concerns and no manager ever responded. Our whole party was disappointed with Havana Cabanas hospitality. This resort could be nice but the people running it will not have repeat customers. I have traveled all over and never been treated so rudely.
