Ruidoso, New Mexico: Gems, Forests, and Caves in Nature’s Playground

Residents of Ruidoso have called it “nature’s playground,” and it’s hard to argue when you see the sun shine over Lincoln National Forest and the peaks of the Sacramento Mountains. On the area’s many mountain biking paths, such as the 17-mile Rim Trail, you can get beautiful views of the surrounding forest. Fishing is plentiful, too, especially in the Rio Ruidoso or Cedar Creek. The nearby Fox Cave—home to radiant gemstones such as amethysts, Ruidoso garnets, and even rubies—was once the hideout of legendary gunslinger Billy the Kid.

The outlaw is the partial inspiration for Ruidoso Downs Race Track And Billy The Kid Casino, one of the area’s biggest draws. It has up to 13 races a day during the season and is home to over 300 slot machines.

In town, art galleries sell jewelry and crafts made by local artisans. Delve into the town’s past at the Ruidoso River Museum, which has exhibits on the area’s mining history, Native American culture, and the Lincoln County War, which ravaged the area during the late 1800s.

Well Maintained Older Resort with Great Staff We had a wonderful stay at High Sierra while doing Mountain Biking in the area. This location is close to Ski Apache, Ruidoso Downs, Inn of the Mountain Gods, White Sands and Valley of Fires. While very well maintained, the units could use some new appliances and furniture.

Roomy We are week owners. We had a 2 BR 2 ba unit on the first floor. I have read many of the other reviews. The things people choose to complain about make me shake my head. The unit is large. (Master bath is tiny) Because we have a 45 year old home, we expect to see brown, gold tile, dark trim and cabinets. As long as things work, we are satisfied. We can see that they are replacing things with more modern choices as necessary. Example: all outside decking is a beautiful rot proof product (Trex) Our only complaints are not serious...replace the missing laundry room door, replace the missing floor tile grout, repair sink disposal. There might be something they can do to dampen the sound from the tenants on the floor above. Everything else was great (wildlife, bed, cleanliness, supplies, parking, view)

Great place to stay Callie and Angie were great!! Super helpful and delightful! They really made us feel welcome and were happy to do their jobs. They made the weekend even more enjoyable! Thank you! The home was clean and spacious. My only issue was the walls from the place underneath us are kind of thin, so loud walking and stomping was tough for me as I am a lite sleeper, but the hubby and the kids didn’t even notice unless they were awake. The pool requires scheduling still, but Angie was helpful and let us know about cancellations. We would definitely stay again.

Great views, but dated Condominium Overall the location has great views. Lots of deer roaming around. Very quiet and peaceful. The Condo itself needs updating. It is very dated and the cabinets and doors are in poor condition. Especially the Entryway downstairs (we were on the second floor) could not be locked. The hallway to get upstairs was dark and not very well lit. Also the balcony door did not have a lock! Maintenance couldn't fix it, so they put a block of wood on the bottom of the door to keep it from being opened from the outside! The mattress was very uncomfortable. Definitely needs updating! The dishes and silverware were dirty had residue and food still stuck on it! Be aware that the road going up to the Condominium is very steep and curvy. I would not recommend going there in the Winter Months. Driving down, there are no guard rails and the road is uneven on the edges.
