Key West, Florida: Dazzling Sunsets, Six-Toed Cats, and Cuban Culture

Located just off Florida's southernmost tip and north of Cuba, the island of Key West is undoubtedly the most famous of the Florida Keys. Frommer's calls it "the land of the eternal vacation." Most tourists come to Key West's gulf-side beaches to snorkel, surf, or fish, but no trip to Key West is complete without a visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where the author lived, worked, and kept his six-toed cats. More than 50 descendants of those famous felines still prowl the grounds of the museum to this day.

At nighttime, locals and visitors alike converge on the Mallory Square Dock to watch the sun dip below the Gulf of Mexico, casting swaths of deep orange and pink against the horizon. The spectacle is so breathtaking that it inspires a sunset celebration each night. The dock comes to life with traveling psychics, one-man bands, and food vendors serving fresh-squeezed lemonade and plantain chips.

Average stay at an average hotel in a not so average town. I am a Hilton fan. Unfortunately, this particular Hilton did not meet my expectation(s). First, it is not like the “standard” Hilton Garden Inn I have stayed before. The beds were harder than any Hilton I have experienced. The room, while it was clean and odor free, did not have that Hilton feel. To be honest, it felt like a Days Inn or a Comfort Inn. The breakfast buffet was no different from any Hampton Inn buffet, with the exception of the price at $18 per person. Maybe it because the Keys that drove the price for a standard breakfast buffet. On a good note, the staff was professional and courteous, and the grounds of the hotel was clean and clutter free. The bar by the pool served quality drinks as well. However, I will not be in a rush to book another room at this hotel on my next visit. I am sure I will be able to find more suitable lodging on my next visit.

A good value for the price. Hotel room was average with a couch, desk, mini frig and microwave. Floor really needed mopping which was a bit gross. Beyond that, the hotel was really nice, staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was very good, free coffee in the AM, then cucumber water and popcorn snacks in the afternoon. The indoor bar was never open, but the outdoor one was great with happy hour and a good bar menu (recommend the pizza and wings). Pool lacked enough louge chairs but pool water and hot tub were a nice temp. Bicycles to rent. Free shuttle to Williams St downtown each hour 9AM until 10 PM was really handy. Trolley picked up from the parking lot. Close to the airport (5 min car ride).

Total waste of money We booked a “Garden View” thinking we would get an interior room. Turns out our “Garden View” is literally less than 30 feet from the highway. To their credit they do offer earplugs! Even in Key West these rooms are not worth $40 a night let alone $300! Thanks Hilton for ruining our vacation that we saved for all year!
