Bloomington, Minnesota: Gargantuan Mall and Family Fun

Located right next to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and crisscrossed by two major highways, Bloomington is fairly easy to get to. It’s a good thing, too, because the suburb’s main attraction, the largest mall in the country, draws 40 million visitors each year. When it first opened in 1992, the massive shopping center marked a new trend in retail, not just for its size—you can fit seven Yankee Stadiums inside it—but for the way it combined shopping and entertainment. In addition to more than 500 shops, the mall has half a dozen attractions including an aquarium and a comedy club. Kids will love Nickelodeon Universe, an enclosed theme park with roller coasters and friendly mascots such as SpongeBob SquarePants.

If you’re looking to learn a little something, visit Historic Fort Snelling—a restored military fort that looks just the way it did in the early 1800s, when it was the farthest outpost of the US government. Located inside a sprawling state park, the fort hosts craft demonstrations, military drills, and cooking exhibitions performed by costumed characters. The museums and galleries of Minneapolis, meanwhile, are less than 20 minutes away by car.

Good stay by the airport The hotel is great, I arrived very tired from the west coast after my flight was delayed. The lady working the night audit the morning of 8/23 was very kind and welcoming. I needed up with a handicap room and with two different shower heads it felt like home. The only thing I didn’t like was the motion faucet in the room bathroom we need more than a second of running water.

Excellent sleep, friendly hotel Arriving tired from our travels, we were thrilled to find that our room was quiet (no hotel or road noise), cool -- from a very effective and quiet AC unit, and dark (with shades drawn), which, along with comfortable beds and bedding, allowed us to get excellent sleep. Hotel staff were very nice, the hotel is conveniently located to much of the Twin City area, and prices, at least for our stay, were excellent. I have read in other reviews that the concierge lounge was disappointing, but I would say that although it probably is a bit below average in terms of breakfast selection, it was still adequate. The hotel rooms could also use some freshening of furniture, curtains, and carpet, but these were also adequate and certainly didn't detract from the very good sleep quality and pleasantness of the hotel. Overall, an excellent stay and our new "go-to" hotel in the Twin Cities area.
