Phoenix, Arizona: Bustling Metropolis and Native American Culture Surrounded by Desert

Though the topography of the Phoenix area is all desert, it's by no means desolate. Camelback Mountain is a city park area with scenic trails that wind past boulders and red-sandstone formations; climb to the very top for a view of the entire city. Or hit the themed trails at the Desert Botanical Garden filled with Southwestern flora such as huge sonoran cacti and other moisture-hoarding succulents. Either way, plan hikes in the early morning or twilight hours to catch the most stunning sunlit views and stay cool.

For an in-depth look at the cultures of Arizona’s indigenous population, browse the 12 exhibition galleries and sculpture garden at the Heard Museum. The collection’s nearly 40,000 pieces of art range from 500 Hopi katsina dolls to a full-size Pueblo oven. In nearby Scottsdale, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West was the renowned prairie-style architect’s winter home as well as a campus for his architecture school.

Negative Experience My first experience at this resort is okay. Pros- The pool and lazy river. I also liked being able to have my own float and the lazy river. Cons- Checking in for the water park was not easy to find. We thought the gate where you go to check-in was just for guests (we bought day passes). It was also difficult to find the lobby due to renovations going on. The South lobby is closed, we had to go to the North lobby. Most of the staff was rude especially the guy at the front desk. My husband and I will not be returning to this resort due to the rudeness of staff. Suggestions: better signage is needed especially by the gate where you go to check into the waterpark. I would have the sign where you can see it from the parking lot. The reason we had difficulty finding the check-in is because we thought gate was for hotel guests. You could not see the sign until you got really close to the gate. If the sign had been where you can see it in the parking lot it would’ve made things a lot smoother.

Staycation Had a staycation with my kids, ages 14 and 10. Son had a blast at the water park. Sadly the water park closes at 6pm. Main pool at 10pm. Rooms were a decent size with a refrigerator, coffee machine, but no microwave which kind of sucks.. Some areas in the resort are under construction.

Not worth the money! I wanted to treat myself to a nice birthday, so we rented a room for 3 days. I instantly regretted my decision when we got there! The first room we were assigned was so stained and gross I could not even put my stuff down. We were moved to another room that was pretty stained but had tile floor. There is construction everywhere and half the resort was closed. The lazy river was more of a dirty fish tank without fish. The only place to have dinner was basically a room with chairs, no TVs, nothing. Slim Pickens was the only decent place on the property, and it closed at 4pm. One pool for all the guests after the lazy river closed - all in all it was worse than staying at a motel 6 in downtown Phoenix for 4 times the cost. Really disappointed. I've sent messages to corporate and no response, not that I expected them to care.
