Phoenix, Arizona: Bustling Metropolis and Native American Culture Surrounded by Desert

Though the topography of the Phoenix area is all desert, it's by no means desolate. Camelback Mountain is a city park area with scenic trails that wind past boulders and red-sandstone formations; climb to the very top for a view of the entire city. Or hit the themed trails at the Desert Botanical Garden filled with Southwestern flora such as huge sonoran cacti and other moisture-hoarding succulents. Either way, plan hikes in the early morning or twilight hours to catch the most stunning sunlit views and stay cool.

For an in-depth look at the cultures of Arizona’s indigenous population, browse the 12 exhibition galleries and sculpture garden at the Heard Museum. The collection’s nearly 40,000 pieces of art range from 500 Hopi katsina dolls to a full-size Pueblo oven. In nearby Scottsdale, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West was the renowned prairie-style architect’s winter home as well as a campus for his architecture school.

Hidden desert gem! We arrived at the Hilton Phoenix resort for a birthday overnight and was greeted by Michael at the front desk who immediately offered to upgrade us to a beautiful suite. He was also kind enough to recommend a top tier Italian restaurant and even offered to arrange our transportation. Throughout our stay we were able to text the front desk questions about the pool, room service ….anything we needed. The property is under construction but the charm and cute architectural details make this a hidden gem in the desert. Thank you Michael for making sure we enjoyed every aspect of our stay!

My carpet was so dirty. Ughh I wish I would have read the reviews, but I have always trusted Hilton hotels & this hotel is not Hilton quality. I could tolerate how old & run down it is, but I struggled with the dirty & gross carpet in my room. Our feet were actually dirty from it, washed our feet & wore our shoes after experiencing that! I will never stay here again.

Transparency If you’re the kind of family that knows how to roll with the punches and go the extra mile to create your own fun, this hotel can work for you. Fortunately, we upgraded to an Ambassador Suite with a connecting room, which gave us plenty of space and made a big difference in our overall comfort. That said, if you’re the type who expects everything to run smoothly and be available at the press of a button, this may not be the right fit. Our experience was a mix of highs and lows. On the downside: no room service, elevators out of order for half our stay, broken vending machines, a mysteriously closed pool bar, and cigarette smoke just about everywhere—including from staff. A week prior to arrival, we were assured all amenities would be available despite ongoing renovations. That simply wasn’t the case. But instead of letting those issues ruin our trip, we focused on what was working—and we were pleasantly surprised. The hole-in-the-wall restaurant and the River Ranch were both excellent. Housekeeping was consistently helpful, Julia at the River Ranch pool delivered top-tier service, and Mike at the front desk was friendly and informative. In the end, we had a fantastic vacation because we chose to focus on the positive. Still, this hotel could drastically reduce the number of negative reviews by being more transparent with guests about what’s available and what’s not. Expectations matter, and setting them honestly goes a long way.
