Del Mar, California: Thoroughbred Racing Just Outside San Diego
The seaside city of Del Mar is perhaps best known for Del Mar Racetrack, known as "where turf meets surf"—partially from the Bing Crosby song of the same name, and partially due to its location near the Pacific Coast. The track came to national attention in 1938 when a little-known horse named Seabiscuit galloped to a narrow victory. During its heyday, the track was frequented by the likes of Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, and Betty Grable; people still come from all over the country to watch live thoroughbred racing here.
Del Mar Beach, a relatively quiet two-mile stretch of shoreline, is also popular. Surfers usually head to Torrey Pines State Park; in addition to riding the waves, you can hike along the park's rocky trails. In town, the open-air Del Mar Plaza has boutique shopping and views of the Pacific.
