Erie, Pennsylvania: Wine Country and 19th-Century Mansions

Pennsylvania’s fourth-largest city, Erie, is a bustling place where around 100,000 people live on the shores of enormous Lake Erie. It flourished in the Gilded Age, so don’t miss a visit to Millionaires Row, a section of West Sixth Street lined with 19th-century Victorian mansions. At night, leave the Victorian era behind in favor of the Roaring Twenties and see a show at the ornate 1929 Warner Theatre downtown. It’s home to both the Erie Philharmonic and Lake Erie Ballet.

In the region surrounding Erie, you can drive along the Lake Erie Chautauqua Wine Trail for more than 50 miles of scenic vineyards, rolling hills, and 24 wineries pouring everything from classic European wines like merlot to local varietals like delaware and niagara. Another major attraction is Presque Isle State Park, a National Natural Landmark full of trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing and beautiful frozen vistas created by icy waves crashing and freezing to form ice dunes.

Not a good stay First time staying here and most likely will be the last. I frequently stay at Holiday Inns primarily because the service is great and the rooms are spotless. Very disappointed with this location. Check in - the front desk clerk was pleasant but with 3 adults was a bit surprised we were given 1 entry key. Ok, no big deal, usually given 2 but maybe they were short on keys. Got to the room, king size bed with a pull out couch. On the surface the room appeared to be clean. I have worked in several hotels so I know what to look for. Once I began my standard room exam (for bugs and dirt) I was not happy with what I found. 2 pillows and the blanket on the bed had stains. Big enough where I don't understand how it passed the inspection of the laundry attendants. I could tell the cases were laundered by the smell. Not sure about the blanket. I went to the closet to inspect the sheets, pillows and blanket for the pull out. On fitted sheet found several hairs. Pillow protectors were dirty, one pillow case dirty. At this point I decided not to pull the couch out to sleep. Not sure what I would find. By this time I was becoming extremely irritated. Unacceptable for $250 a night. The hotel was crowded and by this time I was exhausted so I just used the flat sheet to cover the couch and went to sleep- not comfortable but oh well. Next morning went to breakfast, dogs and screaming kids all over the place, my daughter informed me that this is the hotel very close to Splash Lagoon (kids now make sense). After a horrible night of kind of sleep on a rock hard couch, screaming children weren't a welcome sound. Sorry. The ONLY good thing was breakfast, large portions and it was really good and made to order. BTW, include it when you book if you want breakfast in the morning. Not cheap and there aren't microwaves in the rooms, another thing I thought was weird. A family of 4 will spend $60+ for a meal and a drink. Another plus was a nice lady at the front desk named Joyce, per her name tag. Very helpful and kind. Other employees were somewhat cordial but indifferent so Joyce stood out. Overall, I give this stay 5 out of 10. Would not stay here again. Expected better for the costs.

Terrible customer service Went to Erie for a shopping trip with my family. Stayed at this hotel for a couple of days and was extremely disappointed and definitely wouldn’t go back. On the first night called the service desk a couple of times for a pillow case as one was missing in our bed. They never bought one up had to pick it up from the front desk myself. The housekeeping was bad they did not do any cleaning in our room no vacuuming. On the last day waited for over 45 minutes for breakfast which never came. The person on the front desk wouldn’t credit me the price i paid for the breakfast. Told me I had to wait for the manager i left my phone number the manger never called me.

Do Not Honor IHG Status Business traveler. First IHG to not offer breakfast to a Diamond Elite Member. The Starkey girl at the d ront desk even took it a step further. No coffee cups. Left there, no breakfast, no cups. I'll never make the mistake of staying here again. Hotel couldn't care less either. They're not even close to half occupancy, yet a level of arrogance I haven't seen in a while. This property IS NOT recommended for business travel.
