New Orleans’s French Quarter: Let the Good Times Roll

"Stop thinking of New Orleans as the worst-organized city in the United States," writes author Dan Baum in Nine Lives, his post-Katrina book. "Start thinking of it as the best-organized city in the Caribbean." Some folks think there is something distinctly foreign about New Orleans, a place where people’s priorities seem inclined toward enjoying life and relishing the moment at hand. Nothing says it better than the town’s unofficial Cajun creed: “Laissez les bons temps rouler,” or "Let the good times roll."

Historical buildings with intricate wrought-iron balconies line the narrow streets of New Orleans’s French Quarter. Here, street musicians often fill the air with jazz music, their trombones and tubas swinging back and forth. Just off the Jackson Square park and near the towering St. Louis Cathedral, the legendary Café Du Monde serves beignets under heaping piles of powdered sugar. The nearby Frenchmen Street, just north of the Quarter, provides a slightly less touristy taste of New Orleans nightlife. Some of the city’s most popular live jazz and blues bars dominate this historic two-block district, with each venue hosting world-class musicians nearly every night of the week. And then there's Bourbon Street, where neon lights advertise frozen cocktails and crowds gather along 13 city blocks.

I have to say that I had the BEST time in New Orleans this past weekend! It was my first time in the city! I wanted to be close to the French Quarter, but I also wanted to be far enough. When I got the Holiday Inn Express on Charles Street I was greeted by lovely Charmine. She gave me a little history of the city, showed me the street cars stops, and when I realized how close it was, I knew I made the right decision. These ladies were wonderful and had lots of suggestions for where to go eat. I was very impressed with the size of the room. The bed was comfy the sheets were clean. My stay here overall was lovely! The hospitality was amazing. Charmine, Antoninette, Ruby and Whitley are lovely. I felt VERY comfortable with them! These ladies will be the reason why I will stay here moving forward. The only issue I had was the water pressure in the shower. Aside from that my stay was lovely and I will be back!

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. Everything was wonderful. Front desk clerks were all nice and would acknowledge you as you leave and return. Rooms where cleaned daily and they did exceptional work. This is the first hotel that had a full breakfast since covid. Breakfast was wonderful. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Was Robbed I stayed at this hotel March 2024 to visit my sister for 3 nights. After returning home to Phoenix I discovered that $300 in cash and a credit card were missing out of an envelope in a zipped pocket in my carry-on luggage that never left the room while I was visiting. Immediately I called and they said management would be calling me. Never happened and numerous recalls were met with manager just left N/A etc. Corporate was contacted and they were very helpful but frustrated with lack of response of management to them and myself. The theft resulted in a $2000 total from 70 fraudulent charges on my card in the nearby neighborhood. I would think that this theft would be of concern to the hotel with some attempt to resolve. After a month or so of no contact I reported to New Orleans police which are conducting an investigation into the matter.

Great location, Excellent Staff My wife and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express – St Charles Avenue for 4 nights in April on our first visit to New Orleans. We really lucked out…. the hotel has an excellent location with very close proximity to the I-10 and locally with the tram line stop just round the hotel in very close vicinity. The famous Canal Street is not far away either. The hotel is relatively small and cozy with a standard Express breakfast but still having ample choices and a hearty breakfast. Our room was quiet and clean. Most of all, and we cannot emphasize enough that the hotel has absolutely great staff. We are frequent travelers and recognize courtesy and good service. The front desk clerks Whitney (evenings) and Charmaine (daytime) were very courteous and helpful with local travel and visitations tips. The breakfast ladies were polite and efficient….. this is reflected similarly across the hotel. Our compliments and thanks are due to the hotel management (Antoinette Perkins, GM and Tanya Wade, Asst GM) whom we also had occasion to meet and to receive assistance from. Thank HIE – St Charles Ave for a comfortable and memorable visit.

Too small regardless the price I’ve never stayed in a smaller room; my wife and I felt like we were in a shoebox. The bed was fine but it offered nothing else. The shower was less than a yard in depth. There was no room for our two suitcases and us. They installed new carpeting but didn’t bother to shave off the bottom of the bathroom door so it wouldn’t open more than 30”. The handle of the bathroom door was about to come off because a prior guest had pulled it too hard trying to shut it. There was a gap around the room’s door so hallway light filtered in around the edges in the middle of the night. Complimentary breakfast? Great if you want cereal and bagel. And don’t forget to add $35/day for the parking at a lot behind the hotel. Pay some more bucks and choose from the many alternatives in NOLA. By the way, the reason I picked this hotel was because of its walking distance to WW II museum.
