Bastrop, Texas: Historic Small Town with a Recreational Lake
Established in 1832 by Stephen F. Austin—known as the Father of Texas—Bastrop has been called "The Most Historic Small Town in Texas." The town's rich history is most apparent in its historic downtown. Set right along the Colorado River, downtown Bastrop is lined with decades-old buildings that house local restaurants, shops, breweries, and government offices, such as the County Courthouse and Old County Jail (both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places). There are also more than 100 historic homes within a short walk, many of which have been painstakingly restored.
Despite its small size, Bastrop has a robust culinary scene, with restaurants serving everything from homestyle Texas cuisine to seafood to sushi. Walk to Guadalajara Mexican Restaurant for a taste of Tex-Mex, or head to Baxter's On Main (1 mile away from the hotel), where you can enjoy certified-Angus burgers and seafood while enjoying live entertainment on the patio.
A few miles north of downtown lies Lake Bastrop. The 900-acre lake has excellent bass fishing, either from boats or from a pair of public fishing piers located on the southern and northern shores. Visitors can also fish in nearby Bastrop State Park, or explore the park on foot or bike via its scenic trails.
