Flushing, Queens: Diverse New York Neighborhood Home to Museums and Stadiums
Flushing is located in the northern part of Queens, the easternmost and largest borough of New York City. This is considered one of the country’s most ethnically diverse places, so much so that the 7 train, which connects Queens to Manhattan, is often referred to as the International Express. The train runs through neighborhoods nicknamed Little Colombia, Little India, and Jamaica, each with its own cultural institutions and family-run restaurants.
Built for the 1939–1940 New York World’s Fair, Flushing Meadows Corona Park is Queens’ largest public park and also the site of the US Open Tennis Championships in late August or early September. Here, you’ll find a botanical garden, a zoo, and the New York Hall of Science, which contains space-race-era rockets and more than 450 interactive exhibits. The nearby Queens Museum of Art houses the beloved Panorama of the City of New York, an 890,000-piece scale model of the five boroughs. Citi Field, the New York Mets ballpark that opened in 2009, is just down the street.
