Austin, Texas: Proudly Offbeat State Capital and Live-Music Capital of the World

Built in 1888, the pink-granite Texas Capitol building in Austin is the largest state capitol in the country and even taller than the US Capitol in Washington, DC—proof that everything is, indeed, bigger in Texas. Yet Austin stands apart from the rest of the state politically and culturally, a fact that locals seem to revel in. "Keep Austin Weird" is a popular motto here, appearing on bumper stickers and T-shirts. The weirdness manifests itself all over town, where you’ll find a death-metal-themed pizza place, a cathedral made of garbage, and the Museum of Natural & Artificial Ephemerata, which displays an 1893 World’s Fair stereograph and one of Marilyn Monroe’s cigarette butts.

Austin has been dubbed the Live Music Capital of the World thanks to the city's nearly 200 venues, where bands play everything from blues to punk rock. In fact, Travel + Leisure magazine named Austin one of America's Best Music Cities, calling it the "mother ship for indie rock and alternative-country types." Stubb's Bar-B-Q books some of the bigger acts that come to town, including Johnny Cash and Snoop Dogg. In addition to the live entertainment taking place on a nightly basis, two massively popular music festivals—South by Southwest and Austin City Limits—draw in huge crowds each year.

Good job! Jesus and Ana greeted us with sincerity and warmth. He asked again through our meal if we needed anything. He was very kind.

Great Breakfast & Wonderful Stay!! I had such a great experience during my stay in downtown Austin, and a big part of that was thanks to the amazing breakfast crew—Ana and Jesus. From the moment I walked in, they greeted me warmly and made me feel right at home. Their energy in the mornings set such a positive tone for the day. The breakfast itself was fresh and well-stocked, but what really stood out was the personal attention they gave. Ana always made sure everything was clean, welcoming, and ready with a smile, while Jesus went above and beyond to make sure guests had what they needed. They worked seamlessly together, and it was clear they genuinely cared about creating a great experience for everyone. I travel often, and it’s rare to come across a team that combines friendliness, efficiency, and professionalism so well. Thanks to Ana and Jesus, breakfast was more than just a meal—it was a highlight of my stay. They are true assets to the hotel, and I’ll definitely look forward to seeing them again the next time I’m in Austin.

Friendly staff, clean rooms, great breakfast—only minor downsides were parking and bacon running out. Karl from the front desk was so helpful and accommodated us as soon as we walked up to the desk. Breakfast was served everyday, all the workers were friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and so fresh. The only things that could have been better was not running out of bacon for breakfast (the person in front of me got the last piece) and the parking situation could be way better. We had a fun and enjoyed our stay!
