Austin, Texas: Proudly Offbeat State Capital and Live-Music Capital of the World

Built in 1888, the pink-granite Texas Capitol building in Austin is the largest state capitol in the country and even taller than the US Capitol in Washington, DC—proof that everything is, indeed, bigger in Texas. Yet Austin stands apart from the rest of the state politically and culturally, a fact that locals seem to revel in. "Keep Austin Weird" is a popular motto here, appearing on bumper stickers and T-shirts. The weirdness manifests itself all over town, where you’ll find a death-metal-themed pizza place, a cathedral made of garbage, and the Museum of Natural & Artificial Ephemerata, which displays an 1893 World’s Fair stereograph and one of Marilyn Monroe’s cigarette butts.

Austin has been dubbed the Live Music Capital of the World thanks to the city's nearly 200 venues, where bands play everything from blues to punk rock. In fact, Travel + Leisure magazine named Austin one of America's Best Music Cities, calling it the "mother ship for indie rock and alternative-country types." Stubb's Bar-B-Q books some of the bigger acts that come to town, including Johnny Cash and Snoop Dogg. In addition to the live entertainment taking place on a nightly basis, two massively popular music festivals—South by Southwest and Austin City Limits—draw in huge crowds each year.

Nice location downtown Nice location for this HIE near downtown, walking distance to Capital, dining, etc. Great staff, very welcoming, and helpful, including Jonathon and Jose who helped me with my technological challenges with the parking garage. (under the hotel, with a fee) Larger hotel well maintained, with outdoor pool. We were upgraded to a master suite which was large and comfortable, with a large bathroom with walk-in shower. We also had a laundry room on our floor which helped to catchup with clothes for the rest of the trip. Breakfast was the traditional HIE fare, but well presented. Hot choices, with breads/bagels, drinks, cereals, and of course cinnamon rolls! Hotel was rather full Saturday night, but there was enough space for seating/eating, and staff easily kept up with the demand.

Unaccomodating, Rude, Unprofessional. This establishment had literally the worst service I have experienced in my life. To give a point of reference, I have never left a bad review for a hotel before. I booked a room through Expedia for a friend who was unexpectedly stranded in Austin. The booking process was easy and straightforward. My friend arrived at the hotel and was told she could not check-in because she was only 19 years old. They would not make an exception. I called the front desk multiple times with no answer. I eventually reached out to Expedia who tried to contact the property. They also received no answer. At this point, I had my friend hand the phone to one of the staff. After politely stating my concern, they still refused to make an exception. I replied that the situation was outrageous. The employee said something along the lines of, “You should check with the hotels before booking for your friend.” There was no attempt at being courteous. Unfortunately, he passed the phone away from him before I could speak further or get his name. I am floored at the level of unprofessionalism and rude behavior.
