Austin, Texas: Proudly Offbeat State Capital and Live-Music Capital of the World

Built in 1888, the pink-granite Texas Capitol building in Austin is the largest state capitol in the country and even taller than the US Capitol in Washington, DC—proof that everything is, indeed, bigger in Texas. Yet Austin stands apart from the rest of the state politically and culturally, a fact that locals seem to revel in. "Keep Austin Weird" is a popular motto here, appearing on bumper stickers and T-shirts. The weirdness manifests itself all over town, where you’ll find a death-metal-themed pizza place, a cathedral made of garbage, and the Museum of Natural & Artificial Ephemerata, which displays an 1893 World’s Fair stereograph and one of Marilyn Monroe’s cigarette butts.

Austin has been dubbed the Live Music Capital of the World thanks to the city's nearly 200 venues, where bands play everything from blues to punk rock. In fact, Travel + Leisure magazine named Austin one of America's Best Music Cities, calling it the "mother ship for indie rock and alternative-country types." Stubb's Bar-B-Q books some of the bigger acts that come to town, including Johnny Cash and Snoop Dogg. In addition to the live entertainment taking place on a nightly basis, two massively popular music festivals—South by Southwest and Austin City Limits—draw in huge crowds each year.

Bad experience Hi everyone, The breakfast is standard (continental). Don't expect too much from it. The room cooling is effective, and the rooms are quite comfortable. However, a machine operating on the 4th floor was so loud that we had trouble sleeping. The lobby is a mosquito nest. We only tried to sit down for coffee a couple of times outside of breakfast and ended up in our room with severe bites. This hotel is incapable of solving a problem that could have been solved with a simple pest control. The Despite requesting housekeeping upon arrival, we had to constantly follow up. The housekeeping manager either can't plan for this or doesn't know how to do it. Why do we have to keep track of room cleaning? And why do we have to endure this stress? Do we have to constantly check to see if our trash has been removed and our towels replaced? What kind of ridiculous hotel management is this? How awful is it to have to remind the receptionists every time about this? Don't ask for housekeeping when you check in. Getting this service is either a miracle or requires strict monitoring.  It's a loss for us to pay this amount of money for a bad experience, but it might be a good recommendation for you. We will never choose this hotel again on our next visit to Austin. We also advise you to never choose this hotel. We are saddened and angry about this disappointment on our first visit to the US.Hovever staff is friendly and helpful. Have a great holiday/travel, everyone. I apologize for any English errors.

Very good Good hotel although parking location would benefit from signage so it’s clear where to go when arriving. Checked in by Carl who was very helpful and friendly. Room was booked for five adults but fifth bed was a sofa and tiny. Breakfast very good. Really nice pool.

Nice location downtown Nice location for this HIE near downtown, walking distance to Capital, dining, etc. Great staff, very welcoming, and helpful, including Jonathon and Jose who helped me with my technological challenges with the parking garage. (under the hotel, with a fee) Larger hotel well maintained, with outdoor pool. We were upgraded to a master suite which was large and comfortable, with a large bathroom with walk-in shower. We also had a laundry room on our floor which helped to catchup with clothes for the rest of the trip. Breakfast was the traditional HIE fare, but well presented. Hot choices, with breads/bagels, drinks, cereals, and of course cinnamon rolls! Hotel was rather full Saturday night, but there was enough space for seating/eating, and staff easily kept up with the demand.
