Springfield, MA: City of Firsts with Excellent Family Attractions
Webster’s Dictionary, America’s first motorcycle, and the first fire engine all have something in common: they were invented in Springfield, Massachusetts. In fact, so many things have been invented here that it’s been nicknamed “The City of Firsts.”
One of the other “firsts” Springfield is famous for is basketball; Dr. James Naismith held the first version of the game at a Springfield YMCA using a converted soccer ball and peach baskets. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, shaped like a giant silver ball, stands as a testament to how far his invention has come. Visit and you’ll find jerseys, memorabilia, and photographs of the 300 players who’ve made it to the Hall of Fame.
If you’ve got kids, it’s hard to beat the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, a whimsical outdoor park with a 14-foot Horton the Elephant sculpture and a Yertle the Turtle tower. There’s also the Museum of Science, which houses America’s first planetarium, and for history buffs the The Springfield Armory National Park, which has the world’s largest historic US military small-arms collection. If you’re looking for a little more excitement, ride Bizarro—often rated the number-one steel coaster in the world—at Six Flags New England. Typical for the City of Firsts, the park also boasts tallest swing ride on the planet, the SkyScreamer.
