Hotel At a Glance: Homestead Resort
The 126-year-old Homestead Resort has a near-miraculous feature on its property—its very own Homestead Crater filled with 96-degree geothermal spring water for swimming, diving, and soaking. Surrounded by Utah's Wasatch Mountains, the historic resort also draws visitors for its proximity to outdoor recreation, the on-site Crater Springs Golf Course, and its charming cottage accommodations. Each morning, a complimentary continental breakfast is served.
- Must-see: Homestead Crater is the 10,000-year-old onsite geothermic crater and the place to go swimming year-round. The interior is heated by spring mineral water to a constant temperature of 90-96 degrees, and the hole in the dome lets in sunlight
- Go scuba diving in the Crater, the country's only warm-water scuba destination, or try paddle-board yoga, snorkeling, or just laying along the custom decks.
- Spacious rooms and cottages: Cottages and garden rooms all have their own private deck or patio. Some feature vintage quilts and century-old photographs of the property.
- Fore!: Go golfing on the 18-hole Crater Springs Golf Course, which features GPS-equipped golf carts and new ponds and water features. Frommer's says the course is "well worth the trip." (Golf course opens April 15, weather permitting)
- Simon's Restaurant serves pot roast, country fried steak, and other comfort foods. There's also a gluten-free menu.
- Take the free shuttle to one of the four mountain resorts in the area—Deer Valley, Park City Mountain Resort, The Canyons, and Sundance, for hiking and chairlift rides during the spring and summer.
- Wasatch Mountain State Park is just minutes from the resort and offers miles of mountain trails for hiking, biking, ATV riding, or horseback riding.
Midway, Utah: Mountain Scenery and Caves in Northern Utah
Winter sports are big in Midway. The home of the 2002 Winter Olympics cross-country skiing and biathlon events, this little northern Utah town seems made for outdoors lovers. Deer Valley, ranked the “#1 Ski Resort in North America” by the readers of SKI Magazine, is also a great place for spring and summer activities. You can ride a scenic chairlift to the top of Bald Mountain and go hiking, or mountain bike through 400 miles of trails.
Hike into Timpanogos Cave National Monument, three limestone caverns that are connected by man-made tunnels, where you can see helictites, stalactites, and stalagmite formations inside. Don't miss a chance to view the area's spectacular mountain scenery. A great way to do this is on the Heber Creeper, a 100-year-old steam locomotive that travels next to jaw-dropping views of the Provo Canyon Scenic Byway.
