The Las Vegas Strip: 24/7 Entertainment and Fine Dining

With an almost unlimited variety of casinos, bars and nightclubs, and live entertainment, the general consensus along the Las Vegas Strip seems to be “go big or go home.” And you can go really big here. Make a beeline for the dozens of 24-hour casinos lining the neon-lit Strip to tango with Lady Luck in high-stakes games of roulette, blackjack, and poker; or grab a front-row seat to the city’s over-the-top glitz at nightly magic, acrobatic, and musical performances. Be sure to stick around for mealtimes—casinos on the Strip are known for their fine-dining restaurants and extravagant buffets overflowing with crab legs and prime rib.

Even Sin City isn’t all casinos, all the time. Go shopping at the high-end boutiques found inside most hotels on the Las Vegas Strip, or head to Fashion Show Las Vegas to browse racks at Neiman Marcus, Macy’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue. You can also virtually travel the globe in just a few city blocks, thanks to the Strip’s re-creation of the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, and Venetian canals. And you’ll find a surprising number of activities in Las Vegas for kids hidden amid the raucous nightlife.

Always glad to return, however... This was my 13th trip to Las Vegas, my 11th to Horseshoe/Bally’s. Why do I go there year after year? It’s a real estate thing…location, location, location. From this hotel, it’s an easy walk north or south on the Strip. This year, I arrived before noon, which would typically result in an early check-in fee. However, I dealt with a lovely staff member who said they could waive this charge in favour of an upgrade for just a few dollars more. This moved me to the 23rd floor, with a great view of the sphere. My first night there, I noticed one of the three pillows smelled horrible. The next day, I talked to housekeeping and the pillow case was changed. The rooms here are huge and well-kept. Water pressure in the walk-in showers is tremendous. Eight elevators go to the upper floors, so wait time is minimal. A couple of things I don’t like, though. The sports book kiosk does not provide seating to watch sports. You have to go to the nearby lounge. This lounge used to have live entertainment in the evening. Now the place is practically deserted most nights. Time to bring back live music! Also, what is up with the pools? Closed Monday-Friday and open weekends. Sorry, that doesn’t work with the extreme temperatures this year. I know we had access to pools at other hotels, but it’s not the same. Would not return unless they had a pool operating on site during the week. They also need to bring back clock radios in the rooms. Not everyone uses a cellphone.

Yuck Air conditioning in the room failed and we suffered all night in the desert heat as you can’t open the windows. This is the ultimate sin in Vegas—A/C is everything. The pool was closed. Also unacceptable in Vegas, and always a sign of a poorly managed property. The hallway outside our room had a persistent sewer smell. A cup of coffee (black) is $9 (no coffee maker or bottled water in the room).Elevators are in poor shape (see photo). $50 charge for early check in. Valet makes no effort to take your bags checking in. We should have turned around then.
