Plymouth and Cape Cod, Massachusetts: Historical Setting and Miles of Shoreline

Known as “America’s Hometown”, Plymouth was the site of the Mayflower Pilgrims colony back in 1620 and is one of the oldest municipalities in the whole United States. Today, the town’s rich history is still very much visible in its multiple facilities, monuments, and attractions. These include the Pilgrim Hall Museum (the oldest continually operating museum in the United States), the famous Plymouth Rock which is traditionally said to be the disembarkation point for the Pilgrims, the Mayflower ship replica, and the Plimonth Plantation which is a living history museum.

But the important historical setting is not all that Plymouth has to offer. The Plymouth municipality makes up the entire western shore of Cape Cod Bay, with miles of beaches and the Cape Cod Peninsula nearby. The arm-shaped peninsula encompasses a string of idyllic fishing villages, rolling dunes, and 300 miles of sandy shoreline—and it’s still the place where many East Coasters choose to spend their leisurely summer days. Popular attractions include fresh-seafood restaurants, quaint stores, and bicycle trails, such as the 11-mile Shining Sea Bikeway that wends from North Falmouth to Woods Hole.

But there’s also plenty to do in winter in the area, when the crowds are a lot smaller. On the uppermost tip of the Cape, the free-spirited art colony of Provincetown attracts visitors year-round. This is one of the best places to head for a vibrant nightlife scene—there are cabarets, bars, and lounges aplenty. Pop into the Provincetown Art Association and Museum to check out local artwork, both historical and contemporary. Farther south, the Woods Hole Science Aquarium houses 140 marine animals native to the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region. You might even see marine biologists feeding the seals in the aquarium’s outdoor enclosure.

I stay at the Hotel 1620 for conferences every year and am always very pleased. This time I was not impressed with the room condition. The ceiling had a water stain above the bed and there was a large scratch on the connector door. There were very few guests probably due to pandemic and the middle of February so you would think they would assign their best rooms. Very clean though! Nice area!

Disappointed I never leave negative reviews, but I was so disappointed by our experience at Hotel1620. We stayed there for two nights because we were attending a wedding in Plymouth and the wedding hosts secured a block of rooms for their guests. The main areas of the hotel were nicely decorated (although the carpet was a bit worn and dirty in some places) and the staff were very friendly. However, the room itself was moist (for lack of a better word!) beyond belief - to the point where everything was incredibly damp and my socks got slightly wet from walking on the rug. The lamp shade on our desk (next to the AC unit) had splotches of mold on it (which we realized the night before we checked out). The bathroom fixtures and soap dispensers had a good deal of rust (and maybe mold?) and we found a used wash cloth in our bathtub upon our first use of the shower. We mentioned the mold issues to the front desk upon checkout and they did remove the resort fee (for a refund total of $60), but the ultimate bill still came to about $350/night. For that kind of expenditure, even at peak season, at the minimum, I expect a mold-free room that doesn't cause a headache and peak cleanliness. I felt bad for the bridge and groom who also stayed there the night of the wedding and were also disappointed by the state of the room. I leave this review not to be snarky or discourage business, but to provide the hotel with constructive criticism so that they can take steps to correct the mold issue and ensure that future visitors have a pleasant stay with them.

Above and beyond to return a lost watch Our stay at Hotel 1620 was great, but I want to especially commend Jane, the housekeeper who cleaned our room the day we left. My husband left his Apple watch in the room. It had slipped between the bed and the nightstand, and he didn't even miss it until Thomas, the Front Office Manager, called to let us know he had the watch. Thank you to Jane for her thorough cleaning and for turning the watch over to the front desk. Thank you to Thomas for calling me and sending the watch to us. Thank you to both of them for going the extra mile to return the watch.

Traditional hotel A very large hotel, with spacious well equipped rooms ,traditionally American, in facilities and furnished. Bed was excellent and comfortable. No breakfast offered during the week. Also no bottled water in the room which was unfortunate for a mid range hotel , there was a coffee machine with disposable cups and powdered milk sachets and coffee pods , this was a bit of a let down and gave a motel vibe to the room.bathroom was dated but well equipped. Staff pleasant and helpful.
