Downtown San Antonio: Skyscrapers and the Alamo near the Original Riverwalk

In the late 1920s, architect Robert H. H. Hugman designed an urban park around the San Antonio River. He envisioned a space that would be the American version of Venice, where people could shop and dine along the waterfront. The original section, a 2.5-mile riverwalk running through downtown, was completed in 1941. It’s been a vital artery in the heart of San Antonio ever since; so vital, in fact, that the city added two extensions in the 2000s—Museum Reach and Mission Reach—that elongated the riverwalk to 15 miles total.

Located one story below street level, the downtown section of the riverwalk bustles day and night. Stone pathways on either side of the river wind past waterfalls and public art installations on their way to restaurants, boutiques, and lively cantinas that stay open well into the night. Downtown San Antonio is also where you’ll find the Alamo. The historic mission-turned-fortress is one of the most visited tourist sites in the state, thanks to the 1836 battle that made it a symbol of Texas independence. Admission is free for all ages.

Everything was perfect from the moment we stepped onto the grounds all the way to check out. The customer service was amazing and the hotel was well maintained. The room itself was amazing with the river view. The hotel did seem humid in certain areas but hey it's Texas. I would definitely come back again!

The hotel was beautiful and accommodating. The receptionist was so respectful. She even helped to take a picture of myself and my husband. I also love the view from my room. Such a wonderful site of the city and the riverwalk. I would love to lodge there again.

Love this hotel... except .... I love this hotel and have been here multiple times -- Nadja at the front desk was amazing as was the bartender Christine and the waiters in the restaurant, Adan and Tara. Such great, friendly, efficient personnel! Also have to mention the wonderful Thurston, the great Concierge who gave me great tips about going to the Zoo!!! The rooms here are amazing - large, really comfortable and with a great view. I received an upgrade to a really large room - it was beautiful -- However, (and this is why 4 stars and not 5 stars), there were a few things im the bathroom that made absolutely no sense to me... especially for the price of this type of room. In the shower, there was no shelf or bar or anywhere to hang the wash cloth that I was using - (see pictures below for the only places to put the washcloth). And please explain to me why there the drain in the sink has no stopper so if any small item should accidentally fall in the sink, it would be lost forever. (see picture) Additionally, I have never, ever been in a hotel bathroom where the lighting for the mirror over the sink was so awful - honestly, it's just a step away from being dark - there is more light in the shower than over the sink. The light was so bad that after putting my makeup on, I wasn't sure if I would turn out looking like a clown or a zombie - it's quite obvious that a man must have been the interior designed because I don't think a woman would ever think that way (see picture below) The picture below reflects exactly what the lighting is like -- dim, dark and unacceptable. I would definitely return, I would just make sure not to get that type of room...

Third top rate stay @ Hotel Contessa This is the third time that I have stayed at one of my favorite hotels in San Antonio, the Hotel Contessa. The front desk is always pleasant, but this time Nadja made my stay better than ever. First, her polite manor and smile made me feel at home. Then, she checked in with me during my stay to make sure my visit was one of my best. Adan, Shirley, and Tara served me with respect, passion, and humor. Thank you. The Contessa remains my favorite place to stay on the Riverwalk…I will return. I wish all of the a great 2026!
