Downtown San Antonio: Skyscrapers and the Alamo near the Original Riverwalk

In the late 1920s, architect Robert H. H. Hugman designed an urban park around the San Antonio River. He envisioned a space that would be the American version of Venice, where people could shop and dine along the waterfront. The original section, a 2.5-mile riverwalk running through downtown, was completed in 1941. It’s been a vital artery in the heart of San Antonio ever since; so vital, in fact, that the city added two extensions in the 2000s—Museum Reach and Mission Reach—that elongated the riverwalk to 15 miles total.

Located one story below street level, the downtown section of the riverwalk bustles day and night. Stone pathways on either side of the river wind past waterfalls and public art installations on their way to restaurants, boutiques, and lively cantinas that stay open well into the night. Downtown San Antonio is also where you’ll find the Alamo. The historic mission-turned-fortress is one of the most visited tourist sites in the state, thanks to the 1836 battle that made it a symbol of Texas independence. Admission is free for all ages.

Everything was perfect from the moment we stepped onto the grounds all the way to check out. The customer service was amazing and the hotel was well maintained. The room itself was amazing with the river view. The hotel did seem humid in certain areas but hey it's Texas. I would definitely come back again!

The hotel was beautiful and accommodating. The receptionist was so respectful. She even helped to take a picture of myself and my husband. I also love the view from my room. Such a wonderful site of the city and the riverwalk. I would love to lodge there again.

Hotel Contessa: A Stylish Stay Right on the Riverwalk! If you’re headed to San Antonio and want a place that blends upscale cool with down-to-earth hospitality, look no further than Hotel Contessa. This spot checked all the boxes for us — it’s right on the Riverwalk, so you’re steps away from all the action, but inside it’s a whole other world: chic, modern, and just the right amount of swanky. From the jump, we knew we were in good hands. Nadia at the front desk deserves a shout-out — she handled a super busy check-in with total grace. Even though the front desk was clearly understaffed at the time, she kept things calm, friendly, and efficient. That’s no small feat! And let’s talk about the valet team — Samuel and the rest of the crew were absolute pros. The front drive was hectic (as downtown hotels often are), but they managed it all with respect, good humor, and impressive speed. They made coming and going a breeze. Beyond that, Hotel Contessa made the perfect base for exploring the city. Whether we were wandering along the Riverwalk or heading out for a day trip, it was awesome to come back to a hotel that felt like a retreat. Bottom line: I’ll be recommending Hotel Contessa to anyone looking for a stylish, friendly place to stay in San Antonio. Can’t wait to come back!

Pretty Hotel, Poor Guest Experience Upon arrival, you’re warmly greeted by an eager valet team—great if you’re planning to spend $53+ (plus tip) per day for parking. Unfortunately, they either aren’t honest or simply misinformed about more affordable options nearby. Just FYI: there’s a lot caddy-corner from the hotel for $25/day (no in-and-out privileges), but asking valet won’t help—they insist everything else is more expensive. Inside, you’re hit with a strong signature scent—pleasant, but overwhelming. It almost feels like it’s masking something. Check-in staff was friendly at least! We were in town for our son’s BMT graduation at Lackland AFB, so we weren’t in the room much. When we were, we noticed the A/C barely worked and the tub backed up during every shower. The bathroom fan also didn’t work, which left the room muggy for quite a while. There’s a small fridge in-room, but NO MICROWAVE. Also the double beds might sleep two children, but is not ideal for 2 adults. Do not book a 2 double bed room for 4 adults; one of us slept on the couch due to the small beds. We didn’t bring up these issues during the stay—we were exhausted from long, hot days and didn’t want the hassle of switching rooms. However, we did mention them at checkout, and the receptionist offered nothing in response—not even a courtesy apology. The hotel has potential, but for the price, I expected more attention to basic comforts and guest concerns. Loved that it’s off of the Riverwalk, but will be looking elsewhere for our next stay. (That said, one of the bright spots was the bar — the drinks were well-crafted and the bar food was excellent, with friendly service that stood out compared to the rest of the hotel. I’d walk in off of the riverwalk to enjoy the bar again.)

Nice Aesthetics, Lacking in Service and Comfort Upon arrival, you’re greeted by an enthusiastic valet team—great if you’re ready to pay $53+ (plus tip) per day. Unfortunately, they either aren’t honest or are misinformed about cheaper parking nearby. Just FYI: there’s a lot caddy-corner from the hotel for $25/day (no in/out privileges), but valet staff insists other options are pricier. Inside, you’re met with a strong signature scent—pleasant, but overwhelming, almost like it’s masking something; but it’s for sale at the counter if you’re interested in taking that with you. Check-in staff was friendly, which was appreciated. We were in town for our son’s BMT graduation at Lackland AFB, so we weren’t in the room much. When we were, we noticed the A/C barely worked, the tub backed up during every shower, and the bathroom fan didn’t function—leaving everything foggy for a while. There’s a small fridge, but NO MICROWAVE. Also, the double beds are small—not suitable for four adults. One of us ended up on the couch. We didn’t report these issues during the stay because we were too tired to deal with room changes after long, hot days. We did bring them up at checkout, but the receptionist offered no apology or acknowledgment. The location off the Riverwalk is great, but overall, the stay fell short of expectations. We’ll likely stay elsewhere next time. (That said, one of the bright spots was the bar — the drinks were well-crafted and the bar food was excellent, with friendly service that stood out compared to the rest of the hotel. Would definitely walk in from the riverwalk to enjoy this part of the hotel again.)
