Venice Beach, Los Angeles: Colorful Boardwalk and Wide Beaches

In the late 1890s, tobacco magnate Abbot Kinney set out to create a resort town–theme park hybrid that was reminiscent of Venice, Italy. He chose a marshy area of Los Angeles near the beach and hired construction crews to dig out canals so that gondolas could carry tourists to and fro. Kinney brought on architects to design hotels and stores with a distinctly Italian feel. He also added Kinney Pier, with attractions including a dance hall, auditorium, and aquarium. By the 1950s, the area had fallen into disrepair, but Venice was revitalized after an influx of hippies and artists moved in during the 1970s. Today, the Ocean Front Walk remains a prime spot for people-watching—it's a bustling blend of musicians, artists, street vendors, skateboarders, and only-in-LA eccentrics.

If you get tired of lounging on the sands of Venice Beach, you can hop on the 26-mile bike path to ride up the coast to sunny Santa Monica. This beachfront locale is best known for its namesake pier, which juts into the Pacific Ocean and hums with lively amusement park attractions, including a Ferris wheel, a roller coaster, and a carousel from the 1920s.

The people made the visit A mixed but good stay. Let's get the bad out of the way. Venice Beach has me feeling old with the noise and the overwhelming weed smell that kept me from opening the windows and enjoying my patio view of the gorgeous ocean. The cloth couches and carpet definitely feel like the room has been humid. And the shower is a little claustrophobic if you're bigger than 5'2 and 120 pounds. I've seen complaints about the slow elevator and it is a little but really not that bad. BUT the good is plentiful. The view. The food. The promptness of both room service and the rooftop bar service. The incredible view from the rooftop bar (2 floors made a surprisingly big difference! But make a reservation, it gets busy!) The huge size of suites, which aren't a big price upgrade. What sets the Erwin apart, though, are the people. From Anthony who greets you at valet to the ever-patient -and- helpful Desiree to Andrés in Engineering (who fixed my a/c lickety split then apologized because he thought he might be dirty from a big mechanical job) to the charming Danny at the rooftop restaurant. Everyone was so friendly and kind and relaxed and lovely, and that set a great tone for my stay. I hear they just got taken over by new management who was vowed to clear out the bugs (not live ones) in the room service systems and the TVs, which are a little weird, so I expect it will just get better. I don't think I'd stay in a back/oceanfront room again just because of boardwalk noise and aromas, but I might have to check out the upgrades down the road Special thanks to Desiree and Anthony and Andrés and Danny for making me feel so welcome and at home.

Charming hotel, and top notch staff The hotel Erwin is a small boutique hotel. The decor is fun and funky. There is no lobby, so not really a place to hang out, but it’s clean and comfortable. Miguel, Victor, and Frank all helped make our stay comfortable. A pretty decent breakfast is set up in the bar. Pizza Girl pizza restaurant is attached to the corner of the hotel and there is a small but very pretty area to eat the pizza right in the middle of valet drop off. Valet is very expensive but efficient. There are plenty of other parking lots close by. Rates are, ok. We booked a room which stated “all fees and taxes included” but when we checked out there was actually an additional $80 in “amenities and taxes”. The rooms are not very sound proof. Bring ear plugs and run your fan. Behind the hotel is a “midway” type strip of stores and fun shopping, eating, etc. Beyond that is the beach. Easy walking to get there. Despite these few negatives, we would probably stay here again because housekeeping and entire staff if very nice and easy to talk to.
