Venice Beach, Los Angeles: Colorful Boardwalk and Wide Beaches

In the late 1890s, tobacco magnate Abbot Kinney set out to create a resort town–theme park hybrid that was reminiscent of Venice, Italy. He chose a marshy area of Los Angeles near the beach and hired construction crews to dig out canals so that gondolas could carry tourists to and fro. Kinney brought on architects to design hotels and stores with a distinctly Italian feel. He also added Kinney Pier, with attractions including a dance hall, auditorium, and aquarium. By the 1950s, the area had fallen into disrepair, but Venice was revitalized after an influx of hippies and artists moved in during the 1970s. Today, the Ocean Front Walk remains a prime spot for people-watching—it's a bustling blend of musicians, artists, street vendors, skateboarders, and only-in-LA eccentrics.

If you get tired of lounging on the sands of Venice Beach, you can hop on the 26-mile bike path to ride up the coast to sunny Santa Monica. This beachfront locale is best known for its namesake pier, which juts into the Pacific Ocean and hums with lively amusement park attractions, including a Ferris wheel, a roller coaster, and a carousel from the 1920s.

Great service, great vibe – loved my stay! I had a fantastic stay at Hotel Erwin! From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel welcome and well taken care of. A special shoutout to Miguel, whose great sense of humor and helpfulness truly made my day – he even assisted me with renting a bike and managed to make me smile in the process. The room was spacious and stylish, with an incredibly comfortable bed – perfect after a long day exploring Venice Beach. I also really enjoyed the delicious breakfast with a great selection of fresh options. All in all, a wonderful experience with a warm, relaxed atmosphere. Can’t wait to come back!

Eclectic hotel, but area was problematic The location is very close to the beach and most rooms have a partial beach view. But this is not a beach I would bring family to. At night it gets very rough so I tried early morning - which actually may have been worse. I literally cane back from walking on the beach early because the area was so crowded with homeless. Very sad. Enjoyed dinner on the rooftop restaurant. Food quality was good. But, despite the resort fee claiming we would get priority seating, we were bumped for a reality show taping. We could walk up and order from the bar but got zero service. And because it got cold and despite it being busy, they decided to close hours earlier than what is posted. There is a single, small elevator so the waits are long. It clearly needs an additional elevator. The rooms are cute, older so smaller but plenty nice. I did find my bathroom to have a sewer odor. And tremendous noise from the hallway. But the bedding quality was great and the decor was fun. The morning breakfast was above average. The space is very tight to enjoy it in. Sure seems like rooftop would be a better location. I can’t imagine returning to this area in the future but this hotel is probably as good as you will find in the area. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

A quick stop in paradise The hotel has a cool, artsy feel about it and everyone is very friendly and accommodating. Desiree at the front desk was so charming, helpful and friendly. I recommend The Erwin to anyone going to Venice Beach! The rooftop was a great place to watch the sunset and unwind from a day of traveling.
