Chicago, IL: Where Architectural Majesty Meets Cultural Legacy

Rising proudly along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, Chicago stands as a monument to American resilience, innovation, and design. From the ashes of the Great Fire of 1871, the city reimagined itself as the birthplace of the modern skyscraper, laying the foundation for what would become one of the world’s most iconic skylines. Historic landmarks such as the Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower coexist with striking modern marvels like the Aqua Tower, creating a living gallery of architectural evolution. Home to the influential Chicago School and the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright, the city’s built environment is a tribute to bold vision and craftsmanship.

But Chicago is more than its structures—it's a city alive with cultural richness and civic pride. Millennium Park, with its reflective Cloud Gate sculpture, invites both tourists and locals to engage with public art in the heart of downtown. Just steps away, the Art Institute of Chicago houses masterpieces spanning centuries, while the nearby Magnificent Mile pulses with luxury retail, world-class dining, and theatrical brilliance. From jazz clubs in historic basements to mural-covered alleyways in Pilsen, Chicago’s cultural tapestry is as dynamic as its skyline. It’s a city that honors its past while shaping the future—unapologetically vibrant, diverse, and unmistakably American.

Terrific Choice for Long Weekend in Chicago This was a great choice for our long weekend stay. Our king room was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained by housekeeping during each night of our stay. The gym was 24-hours and well stocked. The staff was consistently very friendly and proactively helpful, including the manager, the front desk team, and the restaurant team & bartender. (One exception would be one of the front desk staff.) The hotel is located right on Michigan Avenue to the south of the Loop. The walk to the lakefront and to Grant Park is beautiful. It’s about a 10-minute walk to the Loop, which we enjoyed every day. The Red Line (subway) is very convenient.

Great location, uneven experience - does not perform like a Marriott Super uneven experience - overall fine, but for being the brand and price it is, I'd expect better. The good: Rooms are modern, clean, well-lit; amenities like free water bottles, lobby coffee, robes/slippers, chocolate and local map. Bed is comfy. Shower water pressure is good, and bath amenities are nice. The windows crack open which makes a big difference. The bad: It was impossible to get hotel WiFi to work continuously, which is apparently a known and regular problem, and the only solution offered is to have individual guests call a third party IT vendor to troubleshoot. I ended up needing to use a personal hotspot to work. In-room HVAC was super spotty, so if you sleep hot you're going to have a tough time (being able to open windows helped, but shouldn't be necessary). If it's precipitating outside, the windowsills will develop condensation and rattle. Noise from the outside is quite loud at all hours. Got a late night knock one night from an employee investigating a pervasive weed smell on the floor - as a lifelong nonsmoker, it was a particularly weird bedtime interaction. The onsite restaurant has good food, hardworking servers and bartenders, and terrible coffee. Overall the guest experience is brutal, through a combination of a ridiculous voucher system (one $16 voucher per room per day, that cannot be combined with the elite welcome amenity breakfast benefit which takes the form of additional $16 vouchers that cannot be combined with your first daily voucher - most breakfast items are $17), silly hours (bar last call 8:58pm on a Friday), and a nonsensical setup (despite the vast majority of patrons entering from the hotel lobby side, you're expected to walk through the restaurant to a host stand at the other side - this is indicated by a tiny sign above eye level that's very easy to miss) with a Sunday brunch hostess who was openly hostile (I said "good morning, we're staying at the hotel and here for breakfast using vouchers," and she replied "Okay? So?" and glared. Yikes!). The location is great and most employees are clearly working hard, and for most people this is probably a fine pick. If you're looking for the consistency and elite benefits that you'd expect from a Marriott property, you may be underwhelmed.
