Chicago, IL: Where Architectural Majesty Meets Cultural Legacy

Rising proudly along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, Chicago stands as a monument to American resilience, innovation, and design. From the ashes of the Great Fire of 1871, the city reimagined itself as the birthplace of the modern skyscraper, laying the foundation for what would become one of the world’s most iconic skylines. Historic landmarks such as the Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower coexist with striking modern marvels like the Aqua Tower, creating a living gallery of architectural evolution. Home to the influential Chicago School and the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright, the city’s built environment is a tribute to bold vision and craftsmanship.

But Chicago is more than its structures—it's a city alive with cultural richness and civic pride. Millennium Park, with its reflective Cloud Gate sculpture, invites both tourists and locals to engage with public art in the heart of downtown. Just steps away, the Art Institute of Chicago houses masterpieces spanning centuries, while the nearby Magnificent Mile pulses with luxury retail, world-class dining, and theatrical brilliance. From jazz clubs in historic basements to mural-covered alleyways in Pilsen, Chicago’s cultural tapestry is as dynamic as its skyline. It’s a city that honors its past while shaping the future—unapologetically vibrant, diverse, and unmistakably American.

Great city hotel! I’ve stayed here 4 times and I will keep coming back. The location is fabulous and the staff (front desk, doormen, and restaurant staff) are universally gracious and helpful and just nice people! The lowest price rooms are small, but it’s the city! Why would I be in my room except to collapse after a great day and sleep? Thanks to Sam, Isiah and Kiera at the front desk when I checked in last time for the totally fun experience.

Modern, Comfortable, Great Location and Staff I stayed at the Le Méridien Essex Chicago from February 13–16, 2026 for a Valentine’s Day weekend getaway, and overall it was a great city stay. The rooms are on the smaller side, but they’re well appointed, modern, and thoughtfully designed, with very comfortable beds, but mediocre pillows. I appreciated the clever storage solutions, especially the nightstands with open space underneath that easily fit small bags or carry-ons. The closet is quite compact, but sufficient for coats and a few hanging items. The bathroom was a highlight: beautiful blue tile, a good-sized shower, and a fun Bluetooth-enabled mirror (the sound quality isn’t amazing, but it’s a handy touch). The bathroom is small with limited counterspace though, so keep that in mind. There was one small housekeeping miss with a couple makeup-stained (hopefully) towels that needed replacing, but otherwise the room was clean and well maintained. As a Platinum Elite Bonvoy member, I received a complimentary upgrade with a limited waterfront view, which was a nice bonus. Even better, we were able to check in early at 11:00 AM on a long weekend, which really elevated the experience (Thank you Leah!) Breakfast at the attached restaurant, Grant Park Bistro, was phenomenal. We received $16 daily breakfast credits per person as a Platinum Elite member, and most menu items were $20 or less, so the vouchers covered nearly the entire cost each morning (wish it covered it all and not just partial). Service was attentive and genuinely welcoming that had us come back daily for breakfast. Amenities onsite are somewhat limited, and parking is steep at $78 USD per night, which is something to factor into your total cost. However, the location is excellent being easily walkable to public transit and major attractions like Field Museum and Cloud Gate (The Bean). Mag mile is a solid 25-30 minute walk away, but easily accessible by the Red Line. Overall, I would absolutely stay here again for a weekend getaway. If you’re looking for more space, resort-style amenities, or planning a longer stay, you may want to consider other options, but for an affordable, modern, and well-located city hotel, this is a great choice.

Conveniently located Room was somewhat small compared to what I normally am used to. But that being said, I arrived late and there was an event going on that weekend. It can get noisy just FYI. Staff were great, food at the restaurant was amazing. Conveniently located too.
