Austin, Texas: Proudly Offbeat State Capital and Live-Music Capital of the World

Built in 1888, the pink-granite Texas Capitol building in Austin is the largest state capitol in the country and even taller than the US Capitol in Washington, DC—proof that everything is, indeed, bigger in Texas. Yet Austin stands apart from the rest of the state politically and culturally, a fact that locals seem to revel in. "Keep Austin Weird" is a popular motto here, appearing on bumper stickers and T-shirts. The weirdness manifests itself all over town, where you’ll find a death-metal-themed pizza place, a cathedral made of garbage, and the Museum of Natural & Artificial Ephemerata, which displays an 1893 World’s Fair stereograph and one of Marilyn Monroe’s cigarette butts.

Austin has been dubbed the Live Music Capital of the World thanks to the city's nearly 200 venues, where bands play everything from blues to punk rock. In fact, Travel + Leisure magazine named Austin one of America's Best Music Cities, calling it the "mother ship for indie rock and alternative-country types." Stubb's Bar-B-Q books some of the bigger acts that come to town, including Johnny Cash and Snoop Dogg.

Perfectly serviceable three-star level property with a good breakfast, not luxury or "Indigo" level really A decent hotel, but definitely a step below other Indigo properties I've stayed at (Indigo Queens, Williamsburg, downtown Los Angeles). I would put this one step down from those - it's not a luxury experience at all. It is a solid three star hotel, with a good breakfast. There's nothing unique or "boutique" about the hotel, it is co-branded with a Holiday Inn Express, and it feels like it. The only real difference I can see between the two "sides" of the hotel is the breakfast area (which is indeed good), and the check in area has different branding. I assume the Indigo rooms are somewhat elevated, but in my experience there's nothing particularly luxurious about them, unlike the first wave of Indigo hotels IHG created. One of the odd things about IHG is the inconsistency in the brand experience. Every hotel chain has this problem to some extent, but it's really noticeable with this brand. This hotel is decent but definitely not at the level of their earlier Indigo hotels, and then there's the "Indigo Anaheim" near Disneyland which is truly a cheap experience - it is clearly a hastily rebranded downmarket property, aging infrastructure, extremely cheap materials, they didn't even renovate the elevators, etc. It isn't even as nice as a typical new Holiday Inn. What is the point of tricking people into thinking this will be a luxury experience with a name like "Indigo"? You just give people a sense that IHG branding is chaotic and inconsistent, which makes you trust the entire chain less. Stop with the short-term thinking IHG. Make your brand more consistent. This hotel, okay, it barely qualifies as an Indigo, but Indigo Anaheim should be rebranded to something else. That hotel is just hurting your credibility as a chain. I say this as a Diamond member.

Wonderful experience I had such a great experience. Vanessa took excellent care of me and my friends—she was so kind and attentive. The hospitality and ambiance were both outstanding. I’ll definitely be returning soon!
