Austin, Texas: Proudly Offbeat State Capital and Live-Music Capital of the World

Built in 1888, the pink-granite Texas Capitol building in Austin is the largest state capitol in the country and even taller than the US Capitol in Washington, DC—proof that everything is, indeed, bigger in Texas. Yet Austin stands apart from the rest of the state politically and culturally, a fact that locals seem to revel in. "Keep Austin Weird" is a popular motto here, appearing on bumper stickers and T-shirts. The weirdness manifests itself all over town, where you’ll find a death-metal-themed pizza place, a cathedral made of garbage, and the Museum of Natural & Artificial Ephemerata, which displays an 1893 World’s Fair stereograph and one of Marilyn Monroe’s cigarette butts.

Austin has been dubbed the Live Music Capital of the World thanks to the city's nearly 200 venues, where bands play everything from blues to punk rock. In fact, Travel + Leisure magazine named Austin one of America's Best Music Cities, calling it the "mother ship for indie rock and alternative-country types." Stubb's Bar-B-Q books some of the bigger acts that come to town, including Johnny Cash and Snoop Dogg.

Great dining experience! Great dining experience at Hotel Indigo in DT Austin! Kristine was attentive and down to earth. Great conversations. Upbeat personality. Insightful about the area, as I was visiting from out of state. Enjoyed the food and company!

Nightcaps with Kristine a must We stayed 4 nights and had a great time. The staff were very attentive and the hotel was within walking distance to many restaurants and night life. We especially enjoyed Kristine who took super care of us each night in the hotel bar. There were many of us and she was amazing! She made each evening very fun!

AVOID AND STAY ELSEWHERE We had no plans to leave a review after trying to work with their management team to sort out the issue with our room...we are now in a position to have to post one. We stayed here the first week of August for our honeymoon and 1 year wedding anniversary. So we've held off almost two months writing this. We had earned points to stay here through American Airlines for context. This review is not for the front desk staff (they were super nice and helpful during our week stay!) This review is based on the hotel, location/area and management. Rooms: We had a suite on the 10th floor and after one night of sleeping I woke up to a massive cockroach crawling on the floor. Then we found a second one. We got moved to another room and at this point we aren't confident these rooms were as sanitary as they appeared. They are very aesthetically nice and the bathrooms are great, but the windows overlook the homeless doing some of the wildest things we've ever seen and we stayed for a week and you don't get any kind of room service. Hotel: it's a nicely designed hotel, but everything feels poorly executed. The pool was super hazy and dirty, the bar had no working tonic machine and they made me a sprite gin and tonic and we wasted money on terribly made cocktails that were overpriced. The restaurant was already dead. They offered us a meal for the cockroach issue and we took the nice gesture. We were the only people there and it took an hour for food to come out, my husband asked for onions off his meal and they put an aggressive amount of onions on his meal. Hard to mess up one of two meals they had to make in the whole place. Noise: they do mention the music venues near the hotel being loud, but they were NOT kidding. You hear loud base at least until 2am Friday-Sunday. Area: avoid staying downtown in Austin at all cost. I'd stay around congress or surrounding nicer areas. We encountered very scary homeless encampments where people, where I kid you not crapping and peeing right on sidewalks and walking around naked. We found a needle in the street and it is definitely not safe for women to be walking around alone for any reason. Right outside the hotel homeless just lingers on the bench and hangs out everyday. Management: Jackie is the asst manager from what we were told. We mostly just wanted some form of compensation because we didn't want to stay where cockroaches linger in rooms and keep in mind this is our honeymoon and overall impression of Austin. We were told we would be refunded and they still have yet to compensate us two months later. We were super calm and nice about this unfortunate situation, but if you are going to offer a way to fix it and still make excuses after YOU offered to compensate us before we even asked, then why offer in the first place? Avoid staying here and go elsewhere.
