Savannah, Georgia: Historical Mansions and a Lively River Walk

Founded in 1733 as Georgia's first town, Savannah is not only one of the most graceful cities in the South but also one the most historic. The old but well-preserved architecture landed it on Forbes’s 2011 list of America's Best Downtowns, and Travel + Leisure dubbed it one of the top cities in the United States and Canada in 2013. The city's 22 famous public squares play host to some famous landmarks, such as antebellum-era houses framed by moss-covered oak trees. Head to Oglethorpe Square to see the Owens-Thomas House, an English Regency–style mansion completed in 1819 that now serves as a museum; tours here depart from the original carriage house and go past its charming English-style parterre garden.

Another relic of Savannah's past, River Street curves for about a mile along Savannah River's south bank. The cobblestone walkways are lined with 100-year-old cotton warehouses that have been converted into antique shops, brewpubs, and galleries. A short walk west of River Street will take you to the City Market, a four-block public meeting space on the edge of downtown.

We've stayed at this hotel before COVID and had a really good stay which made us excited to book again. This time happened to be on a Groupon deal. When we got here, I went to check in and the booking was tied up in the administration office. So, we waited close to half an hour before getting the keys. Beds are very firm. Tough to sleep on. That’s just my opinion and does not bear in the rating. First morning, fire alarm goes off. We're on the 7th floor and scurry to the stairway. Stairs are missing tread - could be dangerous if there is truly a disaster happening in the building. There was no communication from staff about the issue, nobody directing us out. They tried business as usual as the fire department was pulling up. Nothing about what happened as we returned either. Very frustrating. After returning the first afternoon, we were left with no towels or other amenities. Figured it was a blip - maybe because of the fire alarm, who knows? No communication. Second day, it is our anniversary, so we are sleeping in a bit when suddenly we hear someone hammering away at a door across from our room. They looked to be removing the metal door jambs. Needless to say, we were awakened. And once again... No communication. Housekeeping is an absolute disaster. First night, we return to no towels, toilet paper, or even a bath mat. No coffee, really nothing that's supposed to be in the room. Even the house supervisor said that housekeeping would get a -1. Second night, we get back and housekeeping doesn't even make the bed, leave more than one towel, or coffee. You get the idea. Then, we were prepping for dinner and my wife wanted to use the hair dryer. And, it was broken. Just like the indigo. To the hotel managers credit, she did take care of us and even cc’d me on an email to the housekeeping manager. It’s just frustrating. I simply want to have a stay without preventable issues.

Lots of confusion with Groupon, no confirmation # was given, so that confused the front desk. After a 40 min wait the manager was able to get us a room , but not the one I had reserved, I reserved 2 queen beds and wound up with a single King. The rest of the stay was decent. comfortable bed & pillows, except for restaurant within Extremally slow , and parking is $35 / day, cheaper in the lot next door.

Hotel is in a central location to everything but the street noise is a killer…white noise or ear plugs would make a huge difference!
