Hudson River Valley, New York: Gilded Age Estates and Historic Villages

The Hudson Valley begins just north of Manhattan, stretching upward along the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers all the way to northern Westchester County. The area is known for massive Gilded Age estates once belonging to powerful names such as the Rockefellers and Roosevelts. Hyde Park, just north of Poughkeepsie, was the latter family’s home base; today it’s where you’ll find the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library. Another village of historical interest is Sleepy Hollow, the setting for Washington Irving’s classic story about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. Irving is buried in the cemetery here, along with several famous industrialists including Andrew Carnegie and Walter P. Chrysler.

Situated just outside New Paltz, Minnewaska State Park Preserve is one of the region's most peaceful natural settings; come for the waterfalls, winding carriage roads, and stunning fall foliage. The valley also includes the state’s capital city of Albany, where visitors can learn more about the area and beyond at the New York State Museum.

Staff was amazing. I had substantial abdominal surgery several weeks before and needed to sleep upright. Employee Chris brought an armchair up to our room! We will stay again!

Stay at The Element Dogs barking all night, coffee and no cups, stale chips in the room and incompetent front desk staff. All this and more at the lovely Hotel Nyack. I was met with “ call Hyatt” when I voiced my concerns. Stay at the nearby Element, half the price and twice as nice.

Very bad experience November 2025! Terrible experience there was a hole in the ceiling where we could see into the room above us. After paying almost $2500 to stay there, they wanted to hold an additional $1400 on my card and then charge $500 more for resort fees when it's just a normal hotel that's decorated. Pool was extremely ugly and dirty. Manager on duty was very rude and coorperate had to call her to fix some charges and as soon as they hung up she told her employees don't honor it she didn't care what she told corporate and I had to call back and have her fix it while they were on the phone. Just to get a room with holes in the ceiling and view looking directly at a grave site.

Terrible experience, pick another hotel if you want to stay at Nyack This was a terrible stay. I'll go from best of the worst to worst of the worst. 1st, the phone in the room was completely dead. It had no tone and just didn't work. I told the front desk to just call my cell if they needed to instead. 2nd, the decorative seat in the room was missing it's fake jewels. Instead, it was full of sharp spots as you can see in the picture. We had to cover it with a blanket we had from our house so we could use it without getting scratched. 3rd, the lighting wouldn't turn off. They had string lights under the bed and they were linked to the switches at the front of the room. However, they wouldn't turn off no matter what. They had to send a building engineer at 9 PM at night to fix the issue. They just disconnected the wire directly. 4th, the hotel soap was gross. My wife tried it once and immediately re-washed her hands without it. It smelled rancid. I had to go to Target to get us soap and lotion. 5th, the best part is that house keeping never came to our room for the whole trip. We even told the front desk and the front desk staff said they scheduled a cleaning for the next morning while we would be out. We came back in the evening to find nothing had been done. No new towels, the trash cans still full, and the bed still has no fresh sheets. We had to run out into the hallway and flag down a cleaner who was nearby. Even then, it took an hour for someone to show up... right as my toddler was napping. When they opened the door, my toddler heard all the noise and started crying at full blast because they were confused. So I'm there at the front door, grabbing clean towels, hurriedly grabbing up the dirty towels, picking up the makeshift garbage bags we made to toss into the house keeper's trash bag, and just taking the roll of garbage bag liners from the house keeper so we could do it ourselves and handle our crying kid. Do not go here. The only bright spot is the hotel food and bar staff from the Farm at Nyack. They were the only helpful ones.
